United States military members and their families affected by IED or EFP attack incidents in Iraq and Afghanistan may be eligible for compensation.
According to investigators from the Department of Justice, several IED and EFP attack incidents in Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts were done with support from Iran. Iran allegedly supplied several different types of war devices used in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars including:
- IED (Improvised Explosive Device): A detonating weapon often used for roadside bombs, which were widely used in both Iraq and Afghanistan. These devices were reportedly responsible for 63% of coalition deaths in 2007, and 66% of deaths from 2001 to present in the Afghanistan War.
- EFP (Explosively Formed Penetrators): Also known as explosively formed projectiles, these are projectile detonations that are specifically designed to penetrate armor from long distances. The New York Times has described them as “the most lethal weapon American forces faced in Iraq”, with the devices being launched from up to 100 yards away. They are also easily camouflaged in rocks, trash, or other environments.
- IRAM or RAM (Improvised Rocket Assisted Munitions): Sometimes called rocket-propelled bombs, these devices are propane tanks filled with explosives. They were often launched from the back of trucks with a remote control, making them very portable and easily usable tools for enemy forces.
Overview of IED or EFP Investigation
According to a 2006 issue of British newspaper The Telegraph, large quantities of these weapons were manufactured in Iraq. In addition, federal authorities like Mike Mullen confirmed that these weapons were sent to Iraq to support Shiite extremist groups and that the Iranian government allegedly knew what the weapons would be used for.
At the time in 2011, Mullen was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and had alleged that Iran was directly involved with IED and EFP attack incidents. Previously, Congress had placed sanctions on Iran to prevent the country from participating or sponsoring terrorist acts.
These sanctions were specifically designed to limit Iran’s ability to accept payments or make deals, which would allow IED and EFP attacks to occur. Iranian authorities allegedly found banks in other countries that were either willing to ignore or not follow the sanctions in exchange for big monetary rewards.
These financial institutions have recently fallen under investigation of American federal authorities, which may give military veterans and their loved ones who were impacted by IED or EFP attack potential compensation.
At this point in time, nine banks have reportedly admitted to sponsoring terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan including HSBC of UK, BNP Paribas of France, and Commerzbank of Germany.
According to the United States Anti-Terrorism Act, United States military veterans and active service members who become injured or killed by IED or EFP attack may be able to file legal action against the banks that allegedly sponsored the attacks.
These individuals may be eligible for compensation because these alleged acts of conspiracy and negligence resulted in injury or death. Potential claimants should contact a lawyer, to determine eligibility for an IED or EFP attack lawsuit.
