Consumers are receiving checks in the mail this week from a class action settlement involving Truvia sweetener products, which were allegedly mislabeled as “natural.”
Viewers are reporting to our Facebook page that these checks are averaging $31:
The settlement money is from a $6.1 million class action settlement approved by a federal judge in late November 2014.
The deal resolves two class action lawsuits that accused Cargill Inc. of misleading consumers into believing Truvia was “natural” when it contained ingredients that were “highly processed” and/or derived from genetically modified organisms, plaintiffs alleged.
Cargill denied that its marketing, advertising and/or labeling of Truvia was false, misleading or deceptive to consumers or that it violated any laws. However, the company entered into a class action settlement agreement to resolve the litigation and to avoid the uncertainty of going to trial.
Under the terms of the Truvia settlement, U.S. consumers who purchased any Truvia product from July 1, 2008 through July 24, 2014 were eligible to claim a cash refund of up to $45 or vouchers valued at $90.
The deadline to file a claim was Dec. 5, 2014.
