Countless women have filed complaints concerning transvaginal mesh complications. Transvaginal mesh implants were commonly used to treat pelvic organ prolapse. However, instead of fixing the problem many have claimed that transvaginal mesh brought on a large number of new ones.

Plaintiffs in transvaginal mesh lawsuits have claimed that the implants caused side effects including:

  • Pain during sex
  • Urinary problems
  • Multiple occurrences of pelvic organ prolapse
  • Vaginal scarring
  • Perforated bladder, perforated bowel or perforated blood vessels
  • Mesh erosion into the vagina
  • Infection
  • Organ injuries

While transvaginal mesh may seem like an easy solution, there are alternatives that carry less risk.

Transvaginal Mesh and Pelvic Organ Prolapse

What is now transvaginal mesh was originally created as a treatment for hernias. In the past two decades, medical professionals began to use mesh to treat pelvic organ prolapse, which is when the uterus, bladder, or other organs push against the bladder. This can cause a woman to urinate if she laughs or coughs. The muscles are simply too weak to keep the organs back on their own.

Transvaginal mesh implants keep the organs from pushing on the bladder. However, many women have experienced transvaginal mesh complications. Women were still experiencing pelvic organ prolapse in addition to new and painful side effects. These side effects are essentially permanent as transvaginal mesh cannot always be removed once it is implanted.

Transvaginal Mesh Alternatives

While transvaginal mesh appeared to provide a quick solution to pelvic organ prolapse, there are other options that may be safer for patients. Doctors have recommended basic weight loss and exercising. Kegel exercises can restrengthen the weakened muscles that led to the condition in the first place. Consuming less caffeine and liquid in general has also been recommended.

Non-surgical options include wearing incontinence pads or inserting a pessery or vaginal cone into the vagina. Some have used electrical stimulation to treat pelvic organ prolapse as well.

Bladder slings are a surgical option women may choose if they wish to avoid transvaginal mesh. Although more women have complained about transvaginal mesh complications than bladder sling complications, there are still similar risks surrounding bladder sling insertion.

Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits

Companies such as AMS, Bard, Boston Scientific, Ethicon, and other manufacturers of transvaginal mesh are currently facing multiple transvaginal mesh lawsuits. In addition to the claims that the product causes harmful side effects, many are claiming that there is no real benefit from using transvaginal mesh in the first place.

Hundreds of thousands of women have had transvaginal mesh implanted in their bodies. If you have suffered from transvaginal mesh complications, you may be able to win compensation for medical costs, pain and suffering, and other damages. Spouses may join in transvaginal mesh lawsuits and file for loss of consortium or loss of intimacy with their spouse.
