SunRun Deceptive Marketing Class Action Lawsuit

By Matt O’Donnell

SunRun Inc.SunRun Inc. has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging the San-Francisco-based solar energy company deceived consumers into leasing SunRun solar panels by making misleading claims about their cost savings and about the increasing costs of electricity.

Plaintiff Shaw Reed alleges in the SunRun class action lawsuit that the company misled consumers into believing they could save money on “rising electricity costs” by using SunRun solar panels despite the fact that the energy prices at Southern California Edison began dipping or plateauing after 2008.

“The central premise of SunRun’s uniform marketing campaign is that increases in electricity prices will result in cost savings by installing the SunRun Solar system,” Reed says in the SunRun class action lawsuit. “But SunRun deceptively states with certainty something that is inherently unknowable.”

Reed further alleges in the SunRun class action lawsuit that the company was operating without a business license from 2007 to February 2012. The class action lawsuit is seeking a refund on customer fees from contracts entered into before 2012.

The SunRun class action lawsuit also claims company agents misleadingly told consumers they could terminate their SunRun contracts if they move.

The SunRun class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all persons and entities in the state of California who entered into a solar power contract with SunRun prior to February 2012. It is also seeking to represent a subclass of all Class Members who were told by SunRun that they could terminate their contracts without further obligation if they moved.

The SunRun Class Action Lawsuit case is Shawn Reed v. SunRun Inc., Case No. BC498002, Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles.

PLEASE, PLEASE ADD ME TO THE LAWSUIT! I can’t believe I just -now- found this page – – we had SunRun installed in 2011 with the promise that (of course) it would lower our electric bills and we would see a huge savings – – this has not happened at ALL. SunRun has absolutely refused to discuss this matter with us, passing us back-and-forth between their customer service department and PG&E, finally each customer service rep I have spoken to has refused to call me back. This last August their salespeople were canvassing my neighborhood and when I said I already had SunRun and I hated it, they put me in touch with one of their supervisors who spent some time with me going over all of my bills, did a conference call with me and PG&E, told me things about the company that he thought were egregious on our contract, and then suddenly disappeared and would not reply to my texts or emails – – I think SunRun shut him up! My True-Up amount with PG&E has gradually increased every single year until this year it was over $4500!!! During the month of August and September I was paying a combined amount of $700+ for my PG&E bill, my PG&E True-Up payment, and my SunRun bill. This is absolutely ridiculous and I cannot get any satisfaction from SunRun. Another solar company has looked at our contract and add our bills and at the solar panels installed on our roof, the solar panels were discontinued panels before the installation – – SunRun installed too small of a system and used outdated equipment, and absolutely will not discuss their system with me. I’m broke and beside myself!!! Please help me!

Please add me to this lawsuit. They promised me savings but I haven’t been saving anything. I want them to pay. Fed up in Hawaii

  3. Sondra Rogers says:

I was mislead and now overcharged by sunrun solar. I was disabled when they called for appointment, I was ask off I had children, I replied yes so I was pushed to keep appointment. I was told they would pay for themself after 20 years. They lead me to believe I would own panels in 20 years and could buy a maintenance plan for 250 dollars a year. The panels took six months to get up. They have went down twice and have caused damage to a new roof at the time of installing. I have been increased on my payment three times and they now say I will have to pay a percentage to purchase at the end. They hurried up and brought a lady to my house and put the panels in my son’s name and added him to my deed. I have ask them to remove the panels they said no and the draft comes out of my account. They said if I stopped payment they would turn in mine and my son’s credit. Roof still leaking now there will be a fee for them to come out.We need your help to get off of the roof and him out of mislead contract.

  4. Christopher Logan says:

The sales man lied to me when he sold me these solar panels I told him I didn’t want to owe anything so I don’t want them he forged my signature to the foot a lease and messed me out of the tax credit on top of an illegal lease of 25 years on my home in the state of California u can’t have over a one yr lease on anything at a time states it in California law please contact me I have all evidence to sure sun run and just need a lawyer that will take the case

  5. Claire Courtemanche says:

Please add me to this lawsuit. SunRun has lied from the day the took over my Vivent solar account. They have even offered hush money 3 times to make me go away.

    1. Arika says:

Really?! They just took over our vivint account too and they basically told us we’re screwed since they didn’t install a battery back up box before the panels were installed. We were also told by vivint solar that we wouldn’t have to pay any SDGE bills that we would only pay vivint directly…and if we got a bill to send it to them and they will take care of it. That at the end of the year our account would “true up” with SDGE and we would see a credit. we have lived in our solar powered home for almost 5 years now and this is the first time we are hearing of any of this. Horrible horrible customer service all around

  6. James Palacios says:

Please add me to this Lawsuit. I have been lied to and decieved by everyone at Sunrun.. They do nothing but lie .. I have a long list of things told to me that werent true.. also they put 54 panels on my roof and it is producing HALF what was promised in the contract. I have plenty of proof and also they claim to reimburse you for underproduction and now they say there is no guarantee.. these people are theives and deserve what is coming to them. I am looking forward to facing them and fighting them so they cannot continue this deceptive scheme they run over and over on consumers.

  7. Don says:

Who is running the lawsuit so I can apt

    1. Linda Freygang says:

My electric bill has not changed yet I’m paying my bill plus the sunrun bill
I asked the salesman over and over again if the electric company would still be billing me and over and over he said no what a liar
I was told by another solar company that i didn’t have enough panels
When I spoke to customer service they said i must have misunderstood. I know I didn’t. No one will even try to help never tried to look into the problem

    2. Richard Warren says:

I had sunrun solar installed in April of 2022. The system was turned on in May. It worked for about 1 day and then kicked a electrical breaker off. After receiving bills from Edison for over $400 I realized there was a problem. They came and put in a stronger breaker and corrected that problem but I continued to recieve huge Edison bills. Bills were 4 to five hundred dollars in addition to what I was paying sunrun. When I was sold the system I agreed to go with a plan that covered 123% of what I previously used. I was told by salesman that I would never go over and need to pay Edison again. Wrong!! Sunrun has been out to look at my system more than 6 times. it work and then it doesn’t! I was trying to work it out with one of their people and then was ghosted! Help!!

  8. Ruty Murdock says:

  9. G. Wooten says:

Here’s a direction that 100’s of individuals can get behind… Sunrun has knowingly and willingly designed a payment structure for their Field Consultants that purposefully incentivises the Company to fire the employee and not pay them for work already completed… They back-load the compensation for the employee to receive the majority of their pay AFTER the install of the System fully aware that Install takes Months and in my case, almost a year between Contract and install…
After my dismissal, I was informed (in writing) by my Manager that all files that were Approved and set for install would be Paid subsequent to Install…3 weeks subsequent to my dismissal 5 Files were installed totaling over 8 THOUSAND dollars, (a pittance to the Company), the difference to me of paying my Mortgage. I was then informed that ONLY the Files that had been Installed PRIOR to my dismissal would be Paid Out even though after my dismissal I continuously worked for those 3 weeks, (also in writing to my Clients) to keep them from Canceling their Contracts because of the amount of time that had transpired between Contract and Install…I ask… How can a Company NOT pay an employee for work already completed and then wait for the employee to be discharged before THEY complete their aspect of the work… Especially after holding the bulk of the Install Pay for MONTHS and in my case, nearly a year??!!
Also, I have the names and email addresses of at least a dozen ex-employees that this has happened to.
Please contact me if this strikes a chord…

  10. Steve DePonte says:

Please, please, please help me/add me to this lawsuit! I feel like I was deceived and am paying so much more money. My system has gone down twice in the last couple of years and I’m payind high bills to my local electric company and at the same time to SunRun. After stopping payments for the months my system was inoperative they threatened to send me to collection and that would ruin my credit score. The told me that it’s like buying a car that turns out to be a lemon… you still gotta pay for it! I am at my wits end and am in desperate need of help. Please, please, please… I want to this company out of my life!
    Desperation in Hawaii
