SunRun Deceptive Marketing Class Action Lawsuit

By Matt O’Donnell

SunRun Inc.SunRun Inc. has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging the San-Francisco-based solar energy company deceived consumers into leasing SunRun solar panels by making misleading claims about their cost savings and about the increasing costs of electricity.

Plaintiff Shaw Reed alleges in the SunRun class action lawsuit that the company misled consumers into believing they could save money on “rising electricity costs” by using SunRun solar panels despite the fact that the energy prices at Southern California Edison began dipping or plateauing after 2008.

“The central premise of SunRun’s uniform marketing campaign is that increases in electricity prices will result in cost savings by installing the SunRun Solar system,” Reed says in the SunRun class action lawsuit. “But SunRun deceptively states with certainty something that is inherently unknowable.”

Reed further alleges in the SunRun class action lawsuit that the company was operating without a business license from 2007 to February 2012. The class action lawsuit is seeking a refund on customer fees from contracts entered into before 2012.

The SunRun class action lawsuit also claims company agents misleadingly told consumers they could terminate their SunRun contracts if they move.

The SunRun class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all persons and entities in the state of California who entered into a solar power contract with SunRun prior to February 2012. It is also seeking to represent a subclass of all Class Members who were told by SunRun that they could terminate their contracts without further obligation if they moved.

The SunRun Class Action Lawsuit case is Shawn Reed v. SunRun Inc., Case No. BC498002, Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles.

    1. Elizabeth J Griffiths says:

I am also paying more now than ever with their so called solar savings. I want my money back, I want these trash panels removed. I have benn lied to and have contacted my attorney general’s office and the PA Utilitiy Commision.

      1. Ruty&Lissa Murdock says:

SunRun Scammed us Lied to us, Dishonest Sales Rep. JOHN SATERNOW Promised us by adding additional solar panels we will never pay a True Up ever again and that SunRun wouldn’t change us for additional solar panels. What a FKN Dishonest SOB. Now They want to charge us 2 Solar bills.

    2. Cristobal Estrella says:

I was cheated to, Sun Run and Solar Complete. They installed the panels almost 2 years ago and I haven’t had any service. They didn’t wait to get permits from the city and installed panels anyway. The city didn’t approve. But now they don’t want to remove the panels and they want to charge me. $35,000

  3. Nancy Mcafee says:

I have been cheated by sunrun. Now can’t sell my house because of high bills and that cost of panels goes up every year. Tried to talk to sun run. They wanted to sell me more panels. I had a buyer that backed out due to solar costs. My house has gone down $30000. I have another customer that is applying for a loan to buy my house, but has asked real estate sales person about Sun Run.

  5. MARY ROSE ISRAEL says:

Sunrun installed solar panels on my house last year. After asking me for the password to my wifi, I gave the installer my wifi password. That night someone was remotely turning my air on and off. After that, Sunrun falsely put my electronic signature on a contract, that they altered. From there, I have had constant and consistant black outs in my house. The shortages in electricity have cause the furnace board to burn out, the vanity mirror lights to burn out, and other appliances in my house to be negatively affected by the “black outs”. Sunrun has offered to pay me $2000 if I never, ever sue them nor anyone linked to them. I have made known my experiences with Sunrun on the local, state and now, at the level where I am ready to join a class action suit against them and or pursue legal remedy for what amounts to Sunrun deceitfully and fraudulently changing the original contract. Then, they have refused to pay for all the damage they have done in my house. I have documented many times when the electricity in my house repeatedly kept being turned off at the switch of the sunrun panel.

    1. Dewey Duran says:

Looking to join a class action lawsuit against Sunrun for deceptive practices. I purchased a house with a 20 year lease that has 18 years left on it. The original purchase, an 80 year old woman thought she was buying a sunrun system but was sold a leased solar system that benefited sun run in all aspects. The way their contract is written up, states the solar system stays with the house. The seller still alive and well testify. The contract was switched somewhere in the process from purchasing to leasing. They are not a very good company for the consumer of California.

      1. Gary says:

I’m located in NY with similar problem, we initially signed a 20yr lease with Vivint solar and the sold to Sunrun. It’s been a round around with this company and we’re looking to get out of the lease.

  6. Anjie Comer says:

My mom who is a senior citizen was taken advantage of by Sunrun and when she tried contacting the sales agent, he was no longer with the company and advised the company was very deceptive in the sales practices.

  7. Michele Johnson says:

I would also like information. I bought my house from an elderly lady who put two sets of solar panels on the roof. We use oil heat heat and electric and have NEVER seen a decrease in my electric bill. In the last few months it has been twice as high. Also have NEVER seen any kind of credit for having solar panels.

  8. Anjie Comer says:

    Please add me.

  9. Barbara Perkins says:

Please help! I’ve signed a contract with Sunrun and I want out I have issues with these panels not working. my electric bill tripled now they are preventing me from selling my home. I’m so pissed. They lied to me they said that I could remove them if I moved now it’s if you wanna sell the buyer has to agree to a transfer. They won’t even let me pay them off at closing unless I owned the system for 5 years. I don’t know what I’m going to do I need help

    1. Brotie says:

Hello Barbara, it sounds like you signed a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) I have the same plan and it’s about 25% Cheaper than PGE.
The warranty with the PPA includes a production guarantee of 90% plus monitoring, maintenance and insurance. Also, sunrun guarantees that the new buyer can take over your payments. Why would the new buyer want to pay 25% more for their electricity? I don’t know who your utility is but PGE is going up 20% in 2023 How much were you paying your utility vs your solar bill? Your solar bill has locked in pricing your utility bill doesn’t.

    2. Elizabeth Griffiths says:

Hi Barbara, I am in the same situation with my electric bills. I am paying more now and these panels are not doing what I was told they would do. I have been trying to get answers and am now looking for an attorney. I have contacted my state attorney general and the PA Utility Commission. I have been cheated and lied to. My daughter has solar panels on her roof and she lives in the woods. Hers are with TESLA and she gets money back every year from PP&L and only pays the service charge to PP&L. He solar banks unused KWH’s. Mine are ground mounted and out in the open, I should be providing a ton of KWH. I want my money back and these things gone. This company is a big rip off.

  10. Patricia Jones on behalf of Richard E and Donna Jones says:

I too have elderly parents and sun run financed them with a loan where the payments increase over time. This is possibly financial elder abuse. Anyone with a fixed income should not be included in this type of loan. Plus I believe my parents did not understand what they were signing. Please contact me
