Some parents have sung the praises of Invega after they see positive behavioral changes in their children that they feel are nothing short of miraculous.
Invega is a drug used to treat children suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, autism and ADHD.
It can have a dramatic effect on behavior through its effects on the brain’s chemical messengers, known as neurotransmitters.
While Invega can be helpful for many children, the side effects of Invega on children have the potential to be very devastating.
How Invega Works
Invega (paliperidone) works by altering the dopamine levels in the brain as well as serotonin levels. Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters that influence our moods. Invega blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors.
By doing so, the neurotransmitters are balanced in the brain and can lead to improved behavior.
In addition to altering the neurotransmitters, it also affects a hormone known as prolactin. This hormone is typically associated with lactation in pregnant and nursing females, as is stimulates milk production.
Both males and females have prolactin, but at varying levels, with males having much less than women. Invega raises the levels of prolactin in the body.
Side Effects of Invega on Children
All drugs have potential side effects associated with their use, and Invega is no exception. A number of side effects are common with Invega’s use and include: headaches, insomnia, rash, sore throat, weight gain, sleepiness, anxiety, sore throat and runny nose.
For most parents, these side effects of Invega on children are a small tradeoff for the great positive change that are seen, and there is a true benefit to the child.
However, some parents have witnessed severe side effects of Invega on children. The most severe side effect parents note is the development of female-like breasts in their sons, a condition known as gynecomastia.
The hormone prolactin is responsible for stimulating breast growth and for inducing lactation (milk production). When the levels in male children are high, they can start to develop breasts and produce milk.
As one can imagine, this can be confusing and devastating to the child and his loved ones. Boys affected by gynecomastia can begin to hate their bodies, and by extension, themselves, due to the physical changes they are experiencing in their bodies.
This can lead to depression and even suicidal thoughts in children.
Filing a Lawsuit over Side Effects of Invega on Children
If you have a child who has been harmed by the side effects of Invega on children, you may be eligible to take legal action against the drug’s manufacturer.
Parents often claim that they were not well-informed of drug side effects prior to having their child take the medication. They allege that the drug makers failed to adequately warn consumers of the potential risks.
Additionally, parents often allege that the drugs themselves were defectively designed and manufactured, and that manufacturers were negligent in providing adequate research safety studies and a safe product.
