Salle MaeUPDATE (2/26/13): Top Class Actions has just been notified that settlement checks from the Sallie Mae TCPA Class Action lawsuit Settlement have been sent! One Top Class Actions reader reports he received a check for $118 — well above the estimated payout. Congratulations to all successful claimants!

A federal judge has granted Final Approval of the amended Sallie Mae class action lawsuit settlement we reported on in April. Class Members who filed claims for the Sallie Mae settlement can expect to receive their checks in the mail shortly.

Sallie Mae agreed to pay $24.15 million to student loan borrowers as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve allegations it violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) by making a number of non-emergency autodialed calls and/or text messages to the borrowers’ cell phones in an attempt to collect outstanding debt.

Under the terms of the Sallie Mae TCPA settlement, Sallie Mae agreed to pay settlement Class Members between $20 and $40 or reduce their principal balance if they received one of these automated calls between October 27, 2005 and September 14, 2010 and submitted a timely Claim Form by August 31, 2012.
