The Monsanto Company, manufacturers of the popular Roundup weed killer, face a recent Roundup side effects lawsuit in Missouri federal court over allegations that the weed killer caused a woman’s development of non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL), a serious and deadly cancer that begins in the lymphatic system.
Plaintiff Debra T. files the Roundup side effects lawsuit joining the growing litigation against the company. The lawsuit was filed on May 1, 2016.
According to the Roundup side effects lawsuit, Debra, a citizen and resident of the state of South Carolina, says that used the product for years.
She says that she followed all safety and precautionary warnings of product use but was completely unaware that Roundup and its main ingredient, glyphosate, could expose her to serious and adverse risks. She was later diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. As a result of her injury, she says that she “incurred significant economic and non-economic damages.”
The Roundup side effects lawsuit was filed on multiple counts including negligence, design defect, failure to warn, breach of implied warranty, and breach of express warranty.
Debra demands a trial by jury.
Overview: Roundup Side Effects
There have been several reported side effects associated with Roundup, including the development of cancer. Monsanto is now facing more than 380 pending lawsuits in federal court, citing evidence that Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, causes many different types of cancer, including NHL. Some of the other alleged Roundup side effects include:
- Bone cancer
- B-cell lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma
- Leukemia
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other cancers
The International Research on Cancer (IARC) issued a formal monograph in 2015 classifying glyphosate as a Group 2A carcinogen. Moreover, lawsuits being filed against the company allege that Monsanto knew of the adverse side effects and dangers of glyphosate use but failed to properly warn customers.
Plaintiffs accuse the company of misinforming and continuing to misinform the public and government agencies of the safety of Roundup, advertising the product to be “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to birds, fish, and mammals.
Despite cases and evidence highlighting glyphosate dangers, Monsanto maintains that glyphosate is safe to use. Additionally, an article by the National Library of Medicine says that “glyphosate ranks high among pesticides causing illness or injury to workers, who report numerous incidents of eye and skin irritation from splashes during mixing and loading.”
One of the most serious adverse effects associated with Roundup is the development of NHL, cancer that begins in the body’s white blood cells, known as lymphocytes.
White blood cells are present in the body to fight off diseases and infections and are part of the body’s immune system. Some signs and symptoms of the development of NHL include: fever; weight loss; anemia; shortness of breath or cough; enlarged lymph nodes; chest pain or pressure; and a swollen belly.
The Roundup Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 4:18-cv-00689-AGF, in the U.S District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
