The Monsanto Company is facing a new product liability claim from a Florida man alleging the company failed to warn of the Roundup cancer risk. According to the Roundup cancer lawsuit, this man had used the weedkiller for years without knowing the possible Roundup cancer risk.
Plaintiff Keith H. says he had used the Roundup weedkiller since the early to mid 1990s, using the product to spray orange groves in Lake County, Florida. During this time, Keith had used the product for its intended use and saw no mentioning of potential Roundup cancer risk on the warning label.
Keith alleges he did not learn of the Roundup cancer risk until it was too late, and he was diagnosed with the chronic disease. According to his Roundup cancer lawsuit, Keith was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma on June 3, 2015.
After learning the potential Roundup cancer risk, Keith opted to file legal action against Monsanto Company. Keith alleges the company either knew or should have known of the Roundup cancer risk, but failed to warn him and the general public.
Overview of Roundup Cancer Risk
The Roundup cancer risk stems from the key ingredient in the weedkiller, glyphosate, which may increase the chances of certain cancer types. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded glyphosate was a carcinogen in March 2015.
The IARC also linked four other pesticides to cancer development, which has caused major concern to the general public. Researchers began to study the Roundup cancer risk after noticing a large number of farmers were diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma after using glyphosate and other pesticides.
However, the Environmental Protections Agency (EPA) had began suspecting a correlation as far back as the 1980s. As one of the nation’s most popular weedkillers, Roundup has been linked to cancer development in several studies dating back to 2001.
The first study was published in November 2001, published by the American Association for Cancer Research. The researchers found that subjects exposed to glyphosate were more likely to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after being exposed to the chemical in under 10 years.
A more recent study was published by a Swedish research team in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008. The researchers found the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled in less than 10 years after glyphosate exposure.
After news of Roundup cancer risk spread to the general public, a number of Roundup cancer lawsuits were filed against the Monsanto Company for failure to warn. In addition to cancer, the weedkiller has also been linked to a number of other serious side effects including:
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Skin Tumors
- Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumors
- Chromosomal Damage
- DNA Damage
- Other Cancers
Keith states that he never would have used the weedkiller if he had known the Roundup cancer risk. His Roundup cancer lawsuit is seeking multiple damages for failure to warn and negligence, among other allegations.
