An Illinois man alleges the popular herbicide Roundup caused him to develop cancer. The man alleges the label on this herbicide linked to cancer did not disclose the associated risk, and that the active ingredient glyphosate is a carcinogen.
The man is filing the product liability lawsuit against the Monsanto Company, claiming the company did not warn the public of the product’s allegedly defective nature. Plaintiff Glen M. alleges the herbicide linked to cancer had caused him to develop multiple myeloma.
Roundup reportedly contains active ingredients glyphosate and surfactant polyethoxylated tallow amine (POEA), which Glen believes contributed to his cancer. Glyphosate is a non selective herbicide used in a number of weed killers around the worked.
Glen had reportedly treated his yard every two to three days with Roundup, to systemically treat the roots of his fruit trees. Glyphosate works by stopping the plants from forming the necessary aromatic amino acids, which are vital for the weeds’ protein synthesis. Treated plants often die with days.
Overview of Roundup Cancer Allegations
The herbicide linked to cancer may not be fully removed by washing or peeling, leaving the victims exposed to the alleged carcinogen. For almost 40 years, farms have used Roundup without hesitation on their crops, relying on the marketing claims and product warning labels.
Roundup is exceedingly popular as an effective weed killer. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that glyphosate is a dangerous carcinogen.
On March 20, 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency for WHO, had stated that certain herbicides are linked to cancer. These herbicides included glyphosate, with studies indicating a cancer correlation since 2001.
On July 29, 2015, the IARC had issued a formal statement regarding the herbicide linked to cancer after reviewing numerous studies exhibiting data of glyphosate exposure to humans. Plaintiffs in some Roundup cancer lawsuit now believe Monsanto allegedly knew about this link, and they claim the company took deliberate actions to conceal this information.
Furthermore, plaintiffs like Glen M. allege Monsanto allegedly conducted an intense marketing campaign, aimed at government agencies and the general public, to convince them Roundup was safe. Relying on these marketing materials allegedly caused numerous victims to be exposed to glyphosate, which they believe resulted in cases of cancer.
Glen states that he never would have used Roundup if he had known it was an herbicide linked to cancer.
