United States soldiers who sustained injuries from roadside bomb attack incidents in Iraq and Afghanistan may be able to file legal action against the country of Iran for allegedly sponsoring these terrorist attacks.
Currently, nine foreign banks have admitted wrongdoing and criminal conspiracy for allegedly working with Iran, which allowed roadside bomb attack incidents and other terrorist acts to become possible in Iraq and Afghanistan. These roadside bomb attack incidents have been linked to IEDs, EFPs, and IRAMs with the Department of Defense stating these weapons were supplied by Iran:
- IED (Improvised Explosive Device): Often used in roadside bomb attack incidents, and were widely used in Iraq and Afghanistan wars and were responsible for a large number of attacks. Approximately 63 percent of coalition deaths were from IEDs used in the Iraq War beginning in 2007, and 66 percent of deaths in the Afghanistan War starting in 2001.
- EFP (Explosively Formed Penetrators): Described as the “most lethal weapon American forces faced in Iraq: by the New York Times, these weapons made for deadly roadside bomb attack incidents. These weapons can pierce armor and are easily camouflaged, and can be hidden far from the road and can travel up to 100 yards before losing their shape.
- IRAM (Improvised Rocket Assisted Munitions): Also known as rocket propelled bombs, IRAMs consist of propane tanks filled with explosives and are powered by 107mm rockets. These weapons were launched from the back of trucks, and could be deployed through remote control.
Overview of Iran and Foreign Bank Conspiracy
Due to the financial support Iran got from the foreign banks, IEDs and EFPs were manufactured in large quantities in factories located in the country, as reported by the British newspaper the Telegraph in 2006.
By doing this, Iran allegedly violated sanctions placed by Congress that were set up to prevent the country from sponsoring terrorist acts. These sanctions had limited Iran’s financial reach that would allow lethal weapons to deploy.
Iran reportedly got around this by working with banks, which were willing to collaborate in the country’s efforts in exchange for large financial kickbacks. Furthermore, the banks had allegedly altered documents to help conceal this activity.
Banks that have pled guilty to this conspiracy and knowing that the sponsoring would lead to acts of terrorism include:
- HSBC Holding Group Plc.
- Crédit Suisse AG and Crédit Suisse Asset Management Limited
- Commerzbank A.G.
- Standard Chartered Bank Plc.
- Barclays Plc.
- BNP Paribas S.A.
This alleged conspiracy with Iran and the banks had stemmed from 2003 and 2011, which resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of American military personnel. The banks’ actions helped Shia and Sunni terrorist organizations recruit, train, and arm their soldiers to ultimately kill numerous United States military personnel and citizen contractors in Iraq.
Even for the military personnel who survived the roadside bomb attack incidents, they will most likely have to contend with long term medical conditions from physical and psychological injuries including:
- Physical Injury (broken bones or loss of limb)
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Polytrauma
- Traumatic Amputation
- Blast Injuries
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Vision Loss
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
