Data breaches are, unfortunately, becoming an all-too-common occurrence in our time. In a massive recent data breach, customers of Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5th, and Lord & Taylor have been targeted.
Hudson’s Bay Company, which is the parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5th and Lord & Taylor, disclosed that in their recent data breach, much of their customers’ data may have been affected.
They disclosed that for customers who have swiped their credit card in a North American Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5th or Lord & Taylor store, their data may have been compromised.
An independent cybersecurity firm estimated the total customers affected in the recent data breach at over 5 million. Gemini Advisory said that it could affirm with a high degree of confidence that the data of 5 million customers was breached by hacking syndicate JokerStash. JokerStash is also known as Fin7.
Gemini also said that JokerStash was releasing this information from the recent data breach for sale on the dark web. According to Law360, Gemini said that the hackers had been “siphoning” payment information from the North American Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5th and Lord & Taylor stores between May 2017 and the present time.
They believe that information from all of the Lord & Taylor stores, as well at 83 Saks stores were affected. Gemini reported, however, that most of the information was stolen from New Jersey and New York stores.
Hudson’s Bay did not verify the number of customers affected, but it did say that the recetn data breach investigation was ongoing and that they “wanted to reach out to [their] customers quickly to assure them that they will not be liable for fraudulent charges that may result from this matter.”
According to Law360, Hudson’s Bay went on to say that “[o]nce we have more clarity around the facts, we will notify our customers quickly and will offer those impacted free identity protection services, including credit and web monitoring.”
They asked customers that may have been affected by the recent data breach to look at their account statements and make sure they talk to their credit card companies and banks if they see transactions they did not recognize.
Hudson’s Bay says that the recent data breach is no longer an issue and that customers current data is safe. In fact, they told Law360, it did not pose any further risk to customers and that they have taken steps to contain the issue.
The parent company noted that the recent data breach did not affect e-commerce sites, nor did it affect European entities such as HBC Europe, Hudson’s Bay or Home Outfitters. They also noted, that due to this recent data breach, they are working with data security investigators in a rapid manner and attempting to get out information to customers as quickly as possible.
Gemini also said that JokerStash has released about 125,000 of the possible 5 million customer payment card records. Gemini says this follows other high profile data breaches that include companies like Chipotle, Omni Hotels, Trump Hotels and Whole Foods.
These are not the only data breaches that have occurred recently. Retail stores Neiman Marcus, Kmart, Target and Home Depot have all been targeted, as well as restaurants Wendy’s, Arby’s and Sonic. Governmental agencies like the IRS and Office of Personnel Management have also been affected by data breaches.
