Plaintiff Sandra G. has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of herself and others similarly situated, alleging pressure cookers that are being distributed and manufactured by Trisar Products are dangerously defective. Sandra has filed the lawsuit in Missouri Ninth Judicial Circuit, Federal Court.
The pressure cooker class action lawsuit contends that during the last three years, several lawsuits have been filed against Tristar in Florida, Georgia, Ohio, California, Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Additionally, the pressure cooker class action lawsuit states that “these lawsuits specifically relate to the products’ tendency to improperly release pressurized steam, explode because of the pressurized steam, and harm consumers.”
This Pressure Cooker Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-00052-HEA, in the 9th Judicial Circuit Court, Linn County, Missouri.
Hazards of Using a Pressure Cooker
Appliances such as pressure ovens and pressure cookers possess intrinsic hazards and risks that can produce severe and serious injuries if something goes wrong.
A pressure cooker functions by confining steam inside an enclosed compartment. As the machine turns on, it increases the pressure within the chamber by up to 15 pounds per square inch (psi). Additionally, as the pressure being built up increases, the temperature also increases by an upward temperature of 250 degrees Fahrenheit. This higher temperature cooks the food inside the chamber.
However, under these conditions, several serious risks and hazards are involved when working with a device with such high pressures and temperatures, and particularly one that possesses a design or manufacturing defect.
The pressure cooker class action lawsuit is filed by consumers who allege they suffered from severe burns and other serious hazards when the lid off the pressure cooker blows off and smoldering-hot bits of food are blasted onto their skin.
Other complaints from consumers from the pressure cooker class action lawsuit include reports of their pressure cooker contents exploding even after the device was depressurized and they then opened the cooker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Some of these pressure cooker explosions have been blamed on faulty valves which allows the pressure within the compartment to build without any release. Other malfunctions have been the result of failed “safe lock lids,” thought to be in place to prevent the lid from unbolting after the pressure within the compartment has increased.
Due to malfunctioned “safe lock lids,” several consumers have reported of injuries resulting from a broken seal and lid that has flapped open, allowing hot steam and food to burn them.
A class action lawsuit investigation has been opened revolving around issues surrounding pressure cookers. Reports by consumers say these pressure cookers have suffered from issues such as malfunctions, defective parts, and even explosions that have occurred which have caused alleged second and third degree burns on consumers’ bodies.
The investigation covers pressure cookers sold under the brand names Wolfgang Puck, Tristar, Maxi-Matic, Crofton, Aldi, and Cuisinart. Persons may be eligible to participate in this pressure cooker class action investigation if they have suffered similar problems due to a defective pressure cooker or pressure oven.
