Man Joins Thousands in Filing PPI Kidney Lawsuit Alleging CKD DevelopmentA man in joining many others by filing a PPI kidney disease lawsuit against Nexium’s manufacturers, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, and others, over severe adverse side effects and complications he alleges he suffered.

Plaintiff Kenneth W. filed the PPI kidney disease lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, joining a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL) against the company. The lawsuit was filed, demanding jury trial, on July 12, 2018.

According to the PPI kidney disease lawsuit, Kenneth is a resident and citizen of New Harmony, Ind., who says that he ingested Nexium between 1990 and 2018. However, after taking the medication, he says that he developed chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The PPI kidney disease lawsuit was filed on multiple counts including strict product liability, design defect, failure to warn, negligence, negligence per se, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, negligent misrepresentation, fraud and fraudulent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, and violation of state consumer protection laws.

Overview: PPI Kidney Disease

Prilosec and Nexium (esomeprazole) are popular over-the-counter and prescription medications used to treat heartburn. The medications work to lessen the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Some of the conditions that are treated by Prilosec and Nexium may include acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux diease (GERD), duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, gastric ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Some PPI medications also include Prevacid, Protonix, Aciphex, and Zegerid.

However, PPI medications have been linked to very serious adverse side effects. PPIs have been at the center of hundreds of lawsuits alleging the medications cause serious complications such as kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and acute interstitial nephritis — a condition that may result in kidney failure).

People have been filing Nexium and Prilosec lawsuits alleging that AstraZeneca did not properly test the drug for serious adverse side effects and did not appropriately warn doctors and consumers of the possible PPI kidney disease risk.

A study by the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology correlated severe adverse effects and complications with the use of PPI medications. The study discovered that most patients prescribed PPIs had developed some kind of adverse kidney complication. In fact, the study found that patients taking PPIs had a 96 percent chance of developing kidney failure and an additional 28 percent chance of developing chronic kidney disease. The study compared patients taking PPI medications to those taking H2 receptor blockers.

Another study published in JAMA Internal Medicine discovered that almost 11,000 participants taking Prilosec and other PPIs had a 20 to 50 percent increased risk for developing chronic kidney damage than nonusers.

If you or someone you know have suffered kidney damage or other severe adverse complication, you may be eligible to file a claim and receive compensation for your damages.

The PPI Kidney Disease Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-11580-CCC-MF, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The Nexium Lawsuit is MDL No. 17-md-2789 in re: Proton Pump Inhibitor Products Liability Litigation (No. II), in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

In general, acid reflux medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
