Nissan Transmission Class Action Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Drivers led by plaintiff Teresa Stringer reached a settlement agreement with Nissan of North America.
  • Why: Plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against Nissan of North American for allegedly selling certain models of Rogue, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 vehicles with defective transmissions.
  • Where: The class action settlement is pending approval in Tennessee federal court.

Nissan of North America reached an estimated $277.7 million settlement agreement with drivers who alleged the company sold certain Rogue, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 vehicles with a defective transmission.

Lead plaintiff Teresa Stringer said the settlement does not cap contributions Nissan will have to pay, and includes reimbursements for repairs, a warranty extension, and $1,000 vouchers for qualified Class Members that can be used towards the purchase of a new Nissan or Infiniti vehicle.

The $277.7 million estimate includes the new vehicle limited warranty extension of 24 months or 24,000 miles — whichever happens first —  and repair reimbursements, but does not factor in the vouchers, attorney fees, or administrative costs, according to the motion.

‘Jerking, Lurching’ Alleged in Nissan Transmission Class Action

The class action lawsuit was consolidated from five separate original complaints against Nissan, all of which alleged it sold Rogue, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 vehicles with continuously variable transmissions that, according to the motion, were “prone to unexpected malfunction by hesitating, stalling, jerking, lurching, revving, shaking, juddering and failing prematurely.”

Stringer asked for the court to conditionally certify the plaintiffs into two subclasses, one for drivers who bought 2014-18 Nissan Rogues and one for drivers who purchased 2015-18 Nissan Pathfinders and 2015-18 Infiniti QX60s.

Nissan will fully reimburse Class Members for vehicle repairs done at licensed dealers during the warranty period — which will be retroactively extended — and reimburse up to $5,000 for repairs made at unaffiliated shops, according to the motion.

Drivers who underwent two-or-more Nissan transmission repairs will be eligible to receive the $1,000 vouchers, which must be used within nine months from the settlement’s effective date, according to the motion.

Stringer is also asking for a $5,000 Class representative service award for herself and nine others who were named as plaintiffs.

Nissan reached a separate settlement last month over claims the company sold Nissan Altimas with defective headlights

My 2014 Infiniti QX60 still shudders every now. When I brought this to the attention of my Infiniti Service Center a few years ago, when the vehicle was under warranty, they claimed to fix the problem by a software update. As of October 2023 my QX60 still have a current trouble code P17F0-00 CVT JUDDER (T/ M INSPECTION). Infiniti never resolve the CVT issue. Help please.

  2. Anissa Henry says:

My QX60 has been having transmission issues for quite some time. I have repeatedly taken it to the dealership service department for repair and was told that they could not find anything. I just took it on Friday again and now that I am 2,000 miles over my extended warranty (that expires Feb 2024 or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first), they find the issue and are not willing to honor my warranty. Please add me to the class action.

I just took my 2015 QX60 to a transmission shop and was told the transmission is slipping. I was given copies of the codes they found. Please add me to your lawsuit.

My 2016 Nissan Rouge has left me on the side of the road twice. The first time was May 2022 on the St Louis turnpike. Engine went to 7000 RPM and would not go faster then 30 MPH. We had to drive 30 MPH until we found a safe place to pull off side of road, this action put in danger of getting hit by fast moving traffic. After several hours on side of road, we were told after “CVT” would cooled down, might be able to continue. When we returned to Albuquerque on the 4 June an appointment was made with local Nissan dealer. Maintenance Manager said he would take care of problem, and a defective part was replaced and no more problems should accrue again.
On Sept 1 2023 on I-25 just past Longmout Colorado and the exact same thing happened. WE located Longmout Valley Nissan dealership that would be open the next day. After a 4 hour inspection manager told me we needed a new transmission as the transmission recorded 4 failures since last maintenance was preformed. He had to get Nissan HQ approval and it would take 5 days. He reset the CVT sensors and said I might make it home if I drove carefully.
Took it to Nissan Albuquerque told maintenance manager what Valley said, his reply was he would do what he need to do, again parts were replaced. Cannot except repairs as only 12 month guarantee is in effect.
I’m in the process of selling Rouge as I can’t be left on roadside again . What is my next step

I purchased my car used from Tidelands Ford. The vehicle showed signs of the CVT problem intermittently, but I never felt it was a big deal. I never knew just a few months later, that the class action took place for the issue. I was never notified by Tidelands or Infiniti despite registering the vehicle. I feel raped. I went to sell the vehicle and now can’t sell, because I don’t have $7300 to have the CVT replaced. Where or who, do I complain to?
