An Ohio woman recently filed a Mirena IUD lawsuit against Bayer Healthcare over serious side effects of the popular birth control device.

The plaintiff, Brittany H., alleges she was implanted with a Mirena IUD as a form of permanent birth control back in 2007, which lasted without complication for several years. In 2012, Brittany had the device removed and a new Mirena IUD re-inserted.

Unfortunately, after Brittany was implanted with the new Mirena device, she claims she began experiencing a number of persistent side effects, including headaches and vision problems. She underwent testing for these issues in 2016. She ultimately filed a Mirena IUD lawsuit.

While an MRI scan revealed nothing of consequence, an ophthalmology exam led to her diagnosis of papilledema—an eye disorder caused by swelling in the brain that affects the optic nerve. She was also diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri, a condition associated with pressure built from the excess cerebrospinal fluid.

Because of these complications, Brittany says she had the Mirena IUD removed. In response, Brittany has filed a Mirena IUD lawsuit against Bayer Healthcare, claiming that these complications were directly caused by the device.

The Mirena IUD lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, design defect, failure to warn, strict liability, breach of express and implied warranties, negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent misrepresentation, and others.

A growing number of injured Mirena IUD patients are coming forward with allegations that the birth control implant led to serious complications. If you have suffered from headaches or other symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri, you may be able to file a Mirena IUD lawsuit.

Mirena IUD Birth Control Device

Mirena IUD is a popular form of birth control manufactured and distributed by Bayer Healthcare. The Mirena IUD was approved in 2009 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Mirena is a small and flexible long-acting IUD that is implanted in the uterus. Over time, the Mirena device slowly releases a birth control hormone.

New research suggests that the Mirena IUD may place patients at particular risk of developing pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). A June 2015 study noted the “higher than expected number of reports of ICH,” or intracranial hypertension, also known as pseudotumor cerebri.

Mirena IUD Side Effects

Pseudotumor cerebri, also known as intracranial hypertension (ICH), is not actually a tumor, though its symptoms resemble those of a tumor. Patients that suffer from pseudotumor cerebri symptoms like Mirena IUD headaches can experience pain and even permanent damage.

Essentially, pseudotumor cerebri is caused by the buildup of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the skull. As you might expect, this can cause serious problems. Excess cerebrospinal fluid can result in several pseudotumor cerebri Mirena symptoms, including extreme pressure inside the skull, causing Mirena IUD headaches and migraines. As the pressure builds, it may begin to affect a patient’s vision, causing partial vision loss or even total blindness. Treatment should be sought as soon as possible.

Patients should be aware of a number of symptoms that may indicate pseudotumor cerebri, including headaches, migraines, dizziness, vision changes, nausea, and depression, among others.

Filing a Mirena IUD Lawsuit

If you or someone you love has suffered from Mirena IUD complications such as pseudotumor cerebri, you may be able to file a Mirena IUD lawsuit. While filing such a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering of pseudotumor cerebri Mirena symptoms, filing a Mirena IUD lawsuit may help to compensate for the pain and suffering that the condition can cause.

The Mirena IUD Lawsuit is Case No. 1:18-cv-02867-PAE, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
