Yaz lawsuitA new Yaz lawsuit has joined the existing legal action against drug giant Bayer, alleging that their birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin caused serious health problems.

The Yaz lawsuit was filed by Alexandra Pappas. According to her lawsuit, she took the drug as prescribed, and was unaware of the serious risks allegedly linked to the drug. Pappas’s Yaz lawsuit does not detail specific injuries, but states that she was permanently injured, and requires ongoing medical care.

Though not specifically stated in Pappas’s Yaz lawsuit, many women taking the birth control pill have reported various blood-clot related illnesses. Blood clots can be a normal part of human physiology, preventing serious bleeding events. However, when blood clots form inside of the body, the clots can block the blood vessels that supply critical tissues, like the brain, lungs, and heart. This can cause stroke, pulmonary embolism, and certain types of heart attack, respectively.

Aberrant clotting has been a known issue with oral contraceptives since the earliest formulations hit the market in the 1960s. However, it has been alleged that fourth generation birth control pills are more dangerous than older versions of the pill. Fourth-generation birth control pills are pills use the synthetic estrogen drospirenone as their active ingredient. This includes Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Beyaz.

The Yaz lawsuit alleges that postmarket surveillance, as well as the required pre-market testing required by law, should have reasonably alerted Bayer to the risk of stroke, pulmonary embolism, and other complications allegedly linked to Yaz and Yasmin.

According to the Yaz lawsuit, women as young as 17 have died from stroke while taking Yaz and Yasmin. Other Yaz lawsuits against Bayer have alleged that strokes and pulmonary embolism have caused not only death, but debilitating, crippling complications like blindness and paralysis.

Pappas’s Yaz lawsuit has joined a larger body of litigation called a multidistrict litigation (MDL) or mass tort. MDLs are similar to class action lawsuits, which both allow a group of people to seek legal action against a single defendant over similar injuries. Both class action lawsuits and MDLs are designed to streamline the legal process by combining or preventing dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of individual lawsuits by creating a single legal procedure. The main difference is that class action lawsuits start as group lawsuits, while MDLs start as individual suits that are later coordinated into a group lawsuit.

The Yaz lawsuit is Alexandra Pappas v. Bayer Corporation, et al., Case No. 3:14-cv-10305-DRH-PMF, filed within the MDL In re: Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2100, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
