Yet another baby powder lawsuit has been filed against Johnson & Johnson, this time after the product allegedly led to one woman’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent death.
The deceased, Linda D., is represented by the plaintiff Crystal B., her next of kin. The baby powder lawsuit was filed on June 21, 2017.
Linda began using Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower baby powder products as part of her personal hygiene routine in around 1985, and continued this usage through sometime in 2014.
Unfortunately, Linda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and she ultimately died from her cancer on June 22, 2014. According to the baby powder lawsuit, her ovarian cancer is a direct result of using Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder products in her genital area.
The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including failure to warn, defective manufacture and design, breach of express and implied warranties, negligence, fraud, wrongful death, and several others.
Baby Powder Ovarian Cancer
Baby powder, especially the popular baby powder products like Shower to Shower from Johnson & Johnson, have been widely used for years. While the name suggests primary usage on babies, baby powder has been widely marketed as a feminine hygiene product.
Indeed, Johnson & Johnson has encouraged consumers for decades to use its Shower to Shower talc baby powder products as part of a regular feminine hygiene routine. By marketing the product as safe and effective in this usage, lawsuits claim, Johnson & Johnson was misrepresenting the actual safety of its product, concealing risks it allegedly knew about.
Since generations of women have used baby powder products as an essential component of their daily feminine hygiene routines, a link between baby powder products and ovarian cancer could prove deadly for thousands.
Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is a particularly dangerous form of cancer. Ovarian cancer and similar or related cancers are the fifth leading cause of cancer fatalities in United States women, according to the National Cancer Institute. Because there are few early symptoms of ovarian cancer, this disease is usually not discovered until much later, in the last stages of the cancer, which makes this baby powder side effect even more dangerous.
Once a patient has progressed into the later stages of cancer, there is not much that can be done to stop the disease, and it becomes much more dangerous. This delay in discovery causes the fatality rate of ovarian cancer to soar, given that treatment is so much less effective in later stages.
