woman looking at website and deciding to file MyLife lawsuit A class action lawsuit claiming that MyLife.com is a scam can move ahead, a federal judge ruled last week.

Top Class Actions first told you about the MyLife.com class action lawsuit in February, which accuses the company behind Classmates.com of preying on new victims by rebranding itself as MyLife.com after losing a class action lawsuit last year.

Classmates.com was sued in 2008 for defrauding consumers out of money by using spam emails that falsely stated past acquaintances were trying to contact them, and then charging subscribers a fee to discover no one was trying to contact them at all.

Classmates.com settled the class action lawsuit last year for $9.5 million, but the people behind Classmates.com have continued the scam under the name MyLife.com, says the class action lawsuit.

According to the MyLife class action lawsuit, MyLife attracts subscribers by sending mass email solicitations saying that “someone” is searching for them, and then charging subscribers a fee to show an ultimately bogus list of names.

Sound familiar? That’s exactly what Classmates.com was accused of in its 2008 class action lawsuit.

The MyLife scam class action lawsuit also accuses the social networking site of hacking into subscribers’ computers and spamming contacts in their email address books with more solicitations.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken upheld the claim the MyLife’s initial email solicitations violated the Consumers Legal Remedies Act, saying “The plaintiffs have adequately pleaded that they were wold fake names and useless information, and that they were billed for a different subscription than the one they selected.”

Judge Wilken did, however, let Oak Venture Capital — the firm that provided MyLife with a $25 million bankroll — and six individual defendants off the hook because the “complaint does not explain what these defendants did to participate in the alleged scheme,” according to last week’s decision.

On Nov. 15, 2012, this particular MyLife.com lawsuit was dismissed. However, numerous other MyLife lawsuits have been filed since.

MyLife Lawsuit Alleges Cyber Extortion Scheme

Minnesota nail technician Allyson C. says a quick internet search brought her to MyLife.com where it states that she has been arrested and has criminal record. Both of which, the MyLife.com lawsuit claims, are untrue.

When the plaintiff contacted MyLife to dispute the criminal record, her requests were allegedly ignored and the false information stayed visible on the site.

According to the MyLife.com lawsuit, the true business behind MyLife appears to be a “classic extortion scheme whereby the company posts negative information online in the hope that individuals will ‘claim’ the page with the negative information by enrolling in a monthly plan costing between $13.95 and $16.95 per month.”

Allyson says the false information has damaged her reputation and her in-home business as many potential clients will do an internet search before scheduling an appointment for nail services and see a false criminal report.

The MyLife lawsuit further claims that the company intentionally posts inaccurate information to elicit payments from users who want to correct the false information on their page.

Allyson says MyLife.com’s conduct has caused her anxiety, anger and humiliation.

This is not an American company although it is registered here. They could just up and leave if things get too hot. I don’t fall for scams so I will not. Be hurt but I feel bad for younger and more gullible people who do.
I think Google should be held to account for this. Without Google they would not be able to be as successful as they have been. Face book was recently taken to task for not protecting their customers.

  4. Ryan Hettenhausen says:

I am so angry about this. They use my picture, my info, and post false slanderous things about me. Showing that I have a criminal record, bankruptcies, etc. I want all of these false marks removed, and they give no option to challenge line items. From what I am reading about them, this is common practice, and they need to be shut down.

    1. SO annoyed ! says:

PLEASE let me know if anyone is going to sue.. They also made false accusations about me… How can we shut them down ? I know its possible..

  5. Chanda says:

I just googled my name today just out of curiosity. First thing I saw was the website mylife.com giving my name age and town and when I clicked on it an Alert stating that I have an arrest record and liens and bankruptcies plus they state I may be a sex offender. All of which is untrue I am horrified. I want to force them to take it down. I’m not going to pay them to remove false information. This has got to be illegal it may possibly costing me employment or worse especially since I have been trying to keep my address private because of an abusive ex it may cost me or someone else in the world their life. What this and so many internet companies do is very dangerous and unethical! Please help

    1. Heather Fulmore says:

If I find that kind of information about me, I will be very upset. I reported them to the FTC for identity theft and false information. I didn’t see the other bad stuff they posted about me. This organization needs to be shut down. Don’t they have anything else to do with their time? I can curse them if I want to.Let them go to hell. They did not obtain my personal information legally and they had no right to put anything about me attending a school in Canada. I have never been to Canada.

  6. Michelle says:

I definitely would love to sue them for defamation and slander. I took pictures of my page and demanded it be taken down! What if a potential investor, a potential suitor, an employer, etc looked at this bogus information and made a judgement based on what they were able to read? They said it would be taken down within 10 days. These type of websites are out of control and need to be dealt with harshly!!! Repeat offenders need prison time. Claiming I hide my social profiles because they can’t access them, Saying I have a criminal record, saying I have a phD in Psychology, and I earned it in 1985? I was 17 at the time.

    1. Layla says:

Please let me know if you do. The worst is the anonymous comments from individuals who too slander you. I’m fighting this now. I’m incredibly devastated and wish to sue.

      1. Lawsuit says:

I’m an attorney. Just learned tonight that there are defamatory anonymous statements on mylife. Will be calling them in the morning, but I am shocked at what I’m reading in the reviews.

        1. Debi says:

It’s not just the slander everybody is receiving at these people’s hands

        2. Kat Hardy says:

Did you get anywhere? As a CMA they place “might” have knowing full well I do not have. I am on a care site and I can’t help but think something more is here. Either way they knowingly publish wrong info and then ask u to pay them to remove it….. Gangster stuff right there my amazing hubby would say.

        3. Furious! says:

I am in the market for a job and keep getting interviews and progressing to the finish line, then inexplicably being rejected without an offer. I have good reason to believe the false information on this site which claims, among other things, that I have a criminal record (I DON’T), is to blame! This site cannot be legal, in any way, shape or form.

        4. Aimee says:

OMG how can this company not have been shut down already. I did a Google search of myself as I am applying for jobs and was horrified to find this page and it’s inaccurate and slanderous information. I hope to pete that prospective employers know this site is a scam!

  7. Bryan Dittmar says:

How do we sue this company. What they are doing is defamation and I’d like to sue them! Is there a way to join the class action law suit. They should be sued for everything they have and shut down the. Imprisioned for the fraud.

I too just Google my name and was shocked to see my life 360 posted all my demographic information!!! I called and they say it’s outside their business hours I emailed and they got right back saying it will take 7-10 business days for them to remove it when it took them less than 5 mn to post it!!! There has to be a class action somewhere with their name attached I will find it. Businesses like theirs need to be bankrupted!! ASAP!!! I am furious!!!

    1. JS says:

I just googled mine and it says I DO have liens, lawsuits or bankruptcies! Which is a bunch of crap! It also states whoever you look up MAY have sex offenses! But when you PAY to see what in the heck this is all about… THERE IS NOTHING…. but if you don’t pay… this could look extremely bad on you and your REAL reputation! This site should be shut down1

    2. Shon Marlow says:

Please let me know what you find out asap. I have the same issue! Penelopebuzz1@gmail.com

      Thanks

      1. Reese says:

I just found the same type of fraud, misleading and embarrassing information stated about me and the profile pic they used was one of my best friend. It’s humiliating to see such filth posted to get you to sign up. Please post if there is a contact for this class action suit. This company is a scam and fraud.

  9. Rene says:

Googled my name yesterday after repeatedly seeing these ads on the Yahoo website of people searching their names & being shocked. Well…..I couldn’t believe it, but there was my name with age in big bold numbers, along with partial birthdate (close enough), old phone numbers, email address & some relatives I never heard of. I was pissed beyond & called them up. They basically blackmailed me by saying they’d take it down & give me control over the information. The guy kept trying to get my credit card number, but thank God I had a strange feeling about the whole situation. I refused & told him I needed to do more research. I recognized some if the wording on the hack profile as partial pieces from my resume on LinkedIn who was hacked 2 or 3 times. Going to report to Better Business Bureau & seek joining any class action lawsuit against them. Please contact me if you have any contact info on how I can join. If not, I still plan to research & contact my State Representative & anyone else who can do something about this crooked, disgraceful & ratchet organization They are basically blackmailing people & hold reputations hostage. I don’t know who these people are they have attached to my name as relatives. I’m so angry about this.

Yes, thinking it would be neat to see our PRIVATE records, and thinking it would remain Private, unfamiliar with these fauds, clicked on it all the way to where they wante some amount of money, at that point, I canceled the scam, but they sent malware into my computer and caused me hundreds of dollars to repair. Now they continue several times a week, giving me the usual scam talk of as others and wanting money to show me what some unknown has posted on my account. Is this not a form of Black Mail? I never have anyone permission to view my life history plastered all over the Internet. Finally how can this scam be stopped from defrauding people. How do you joint this Class Action Law suite? if that is what we have to do to get this stopped? Thank you for any information. (LG,sr)
