Janssen Research & Development LLC, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, faces a new dangerous Xarelto side effects lawsuit, one of many in a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL) against the company.
Plaintiff Nelbie R. files the lawsuit in Louisiana federal court demanding jury trial. The lawsuit was filed on April 3, 2018.
According to the dangerous Xarelto side effects lawsuit, Nelbie is a resident and citizen of the state of Louisiana. He says that he was prescribed Xarelto in approximately September 2016 and June 2017, upon physician’s orders for treatment of atrial fibrillation.
However, on or about June 22, 2017, he says that he suffered irreversible and life-threatening bleeding, as well as pain and suffering from his use of Xarelto, the dangerous Xarelto side effects lawsuit states. He says that he also experienced and suffered from hematuria and gastrointestinal bleeding.
“As a direct and proximate result of the use Defendant’s Xarelto, the Plaintiff suffered serious and dangerous side effects including, life-threatening bleeding, as well as other severe and personal injuries… [including] physical pain and mental anguish … diminished enjoyment of life, expenses for hospitalization and medical treatment, and loss of earnings,” the complaint reads.
The dangerous Xarelto side effects lawsuit is filed on multiple counts including negligence, strict products liability, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, fraudulent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, negligent misrepresentation, fraud and deceit, and violation of consumer protection laws.
Dangerous Xarelto Side Effects
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. It is a blood thinner or anticoagulant medication prescribed to treat and prevent blood clots from forming. This may lower the risks for conditions such as a pulmonary embolism (PE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or stroke.
However, there have been an extensive number of dangerous Xarelto side effects linked to the medication. Some of the side effects and complications have included:
- Retinal hemorrhages
- Abdominal hemorrhages
- Intracranial hemorrhages
- Adrenal bleeding
- Excessive blood loss
- Epidural hematoma
- Stroke
- Wound infection and complication
- Death
Nelbie’s claim is filed as part of a large multidistrict litigation, centered on allegations that the drug makers and marketers were fully aware of the risks associated with Xarelto but failed to sufficiently disclose those risks to physicians and patients.
Plaintiffs claim Xarelto is defectively designed, as it lacks a reversal agent that many other medications in its class do have that can stop severe internal bleeding if they were to ever occur. In fact, an anticoagulant medication known as warfarin provides patients a reversal agent through the administration of vitamin K in the event of internal bleeding side effects.
Thousands of patients have filed dangerous Xarelo side effects lawsuits over the manufacturer’s alleged insufficient disclosure of adverse complications linked to Xarelto. A settlement through the filing of a Xarelto lawsuit may assist patients who have suffered from both financial and non-financial losses. Losses covered through Xarelto lawsuits may include medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
The Dangerous Xarelto Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-03486-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The Xarelto MDL is In re: Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2592, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
