LG Electronics USA Inc. has reached a class action settlement with customers who claim that the electronics company sold defective refrigerators, in a settlement could reach tens of millions of dollars.
The motion for preliminary approval of the class action settlement was filed by plaintiff Jeannette Clark on Tuesday in a California federal court.
According to the class action settlement, Clark and LG reached the settlement after extensive negotiations and “it provides substantial relief to many who would have no opportunity to obtain recourse for the damages they suffered.”
Class members in a nationwide class who purchased allegedly defective LG Signature Model refrigerators can receive up to $5,000 to cover the costs of property damage, which includes $500 for spoiled food, money to cover the repair of the refrigerator, a $1,500 credit to purchase a new refrigerator, if the refrigerator cannot be repaired, and an extended warranty.
The total settlement amount will be determined based on the number of class members who file claims.
According to Clark’s attorney’s, if $500 is given to 10 percent of the class for spoiled food and five percent received the $1,500 credit for a new refrigerator that would total $48.7 million.
In addition, Clark is asking for $367,000 in attorneys’ fees.
Clark filed the LG defective refrigerator class action lawsuit in December 2012, alleging that her LG Signature Model refrigerator that she purchased in October 2011 was defective, and that she started having problems after about one month after she purchased it.
According to Clark’s LG class action lawsuit, the ice system became easily clogged, which would sometimes burnout the motor and cause the entire refrigerator to stop working.
She claims that when she contacted LG’s customer service, the representative recommended that “she would have to empty the ice tray every day in order to prevent the ice system from clogging.”
In addition, she alleges that sometimes the refrigerator would stop working randomly and “display various error messages.”
When she contacted LG about this problem, she was told by the customer service representative that she would have “to unplug the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes and then plug it back in to reboot the refrigerator’s control board,” according to the class action lawsuit.
Clark alleges that due to all of these problems she had with her LG refrigerator that sometimes water would leak on the floor, which was both a safety hazard and caused damage. In addition, in the process of having to reboot the refrigerator, a lot of food started to spoil, which she had to throw out.
The LG refrigerator class action lawsuit was dismissed in June 2013 with the judge saying that the class had not been properly defined, but the judge gave Clark leave to amend the lawsuit. She refiled the class action lawsuit in July.
The allegations in the second class action lawsuit included a violation of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, two violations of California’s business code, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, and a violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey T. Miller dismissed some of the claims in October 2013, including the claims brought on behalf of “the general public” and the breach of express warranty charges. However, he said that the new amended lawsuit resolved the issues in the former complaint, and that Clark had showed a clear link between LG’s technological issues to the class.
In December 2013, Miller ordered both parties to attend and Early Neutral Evaluation Conference in January, which began the settlement process.
Clark is represented by Robert W. Thompson, Kathleen M. Hartman and Jessica Lulli of Callahan Thompson Sherman & Caudill LLP.
LG is represented by Tai H. Park and Amy Dieterich of Park & Jensen LLP, Pamela R. Hanebutt and Susan M. Razzano or Elmer Stahl LLP and John H. L’Estrange Jr. of Andrew E. Schouten of Wright & L’Estrange.
The LG Defective Refrigerator Class Action Lawsuit is Clark v. LG Electronics USA Inc. et al., Case No. 3:13-cv-00485, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

My LG model number LMXS27626S stopped working after only 15 months. It has been two months since I first contacted the company and they have yet to send a technician out to even look at it. I don’t know what more to do.
I’m in South Carolina. Problems with $3000 – 3 yr old LG French Door Fridge. Does anyone know of any class action suites I can participate in.
Our compressor on our two-year, two month old (at time of first repair) LG double door refrigerator has gone out three times since Christmas 2018 (yes — less than one month ago!.) What would be the point of having it repaired a fourth time? I’ve never had a product like this ever. In fact, I can’t recall ever having any product ever that couldn’t be repaired on the first try. I’m 75 yearsd old.
I have LG LMXS27626 failure as we write. Corportion ha given me the run around. where can I sigh up for the class action suit Carol
I Purchased LG LFX31925ST french door refrigerator from Home Depot on 4/29/2012 with 4 yr additional warranty from Home Depot , it stop cooling in July 2018, compressor was changed by LG with labor cost of $250. Four months later it stopped working with same issue, per the Mr. Appliance Expert Service Co in NJ compressor needs to changed again. This time the cost to replacement alone for the compressor is $600 and compressor will be cover by LG. LG customer service gave me the run around asking for original receipt, which submitted and promised to contact me with their decision to offer complimentary service. I am highly disappointed at LG company and HD with their ads in store about reliable appliances.
Without my 5 year old LG refrigerator for 25 days before part was received. (Compressor) which was covered but cost me $450 in repairs plus hundreds in groceries. 5 days later after repairs, now my ice maker is freezing up! Called LG- they’re not responsible- I paid $2700 including warranty which expired 4 months ago. Total nightmare!
got the same problem, LG LFXS29766S not cooling, taxes and coverage and price ,3,399 ,add it all up over 4000.00 , so disappointed, i got it thinking it be the best for family ,and it would last ,lost my food , and on low income ,it not easy to replace ,thanks LG for the cheap 3,399 fridge and made in Korea ,that told me a lot ,cheap parts , bad compressor
4 year old LG French door refrigerator compressor gone bad LG said they would cover parts but not labor 500-700 dollars for labor. Can you believe this! I guess they think we can just pull the money out of or ass! LG needs to be accountable for labor !
I purchased an LG LACS 25426S in January of 2017. The mother board has gone out. Can you tell me what refrigerators are covered under this class action? I am so annoyed and irritated.
Same here, I called a local appliance technician today and he confirmed that my compressor also failed.
I bought the unit brand new at the end of 2014, which has less than 4 years of use….c’mon LG!!
I went shopping online for a new compressor unit.
Part #TCA35911908
Cost was about $350
My original part# was TCA35911902.
I’m assuming they made slight revisions to the component, because the Technician told me there’s at least 3 replacement part numbers that are listed as compatible units:
– TCA35911903
– TCA35911905
– TCA35911908
LG included compressors with a 220v and 53hz, which he mentioned is not designed for US outlets…
So if the case is dismissed does that mean LG does not have to pay for damages or compressor repairs?
LG side by side fridge
model#: lsxs26326s/00
month/year purchased: 12/2014
month/year failed: 08/2018
The compressor of my refrigerator also went out. I have the same model as you and it also only lasted about 4 years. The price of the compressor coming from LG is $300!!
LG French Door Model LFXS29626B – Stopped cooling and making ice right before Memorial Day weekend – lost around $300 in food. Called LG and they gave us the number of a repair place to call. We paid the $75.00 service call fee. The repair man said it was most likely the compressor (which LG did say had a 10 year warranty and they will cover that cost) and the labor would start around $500. We called LG several more times and finally got them to agree to cover the labor. LG called and set up the repair appointment – So I took the day off work to be present when they came to fix it. But the repair people didn’t show up. Called the repair place and they said they told LG they will not take the job. LG never told us this. So here it is July 17th and we still do not have a refrigerator. LG claims they cannot find a repair company in our area to fix it. We asked LG at what point will you replace or refund us, and they snickered and said “that will never happen”.
I asked LG if I found a repair place to fix it, will they cover the labor and part and they said yes as long as we have the original receipt. I registered the refrigerator when we purchased it and fail to see why they would need the original receipt. We purchased this refrigerator in the fall of 2015 – I am organized but not that organized where I would still have the original receipt. I am thinking about going to my local news or seeking an attorney. LG is despicable and I will NEVER buy anything again from them.
I have had the exact same experience. I purchased a top of the line French Door refrigerator for my parents in December 2014. It never worked properly. The freezer section never went below 42 F and the chiller stayed around 54 F. We have tried many times to have it repaired. No service tech will work on it. LG has refused to replace it or give a refund. I will NEVER again buy ANYTHING from LG!!!!
This is making me sick.I have the same issues and been without a Frig 10 days and the compressor just ordered today.Someone should light a match Uber there asses. How would they like to be without a Frig. We have a wedding shower soon the the wedding in Oct. I’m so afraid of what I’m in for.
Going through it now..one week without the fridge…2 more expected. LG camouflaged their fridge under Kenmore Elite. We bought several appliances through Sears thinking that we were supporting an American Company..(one that needed the business)..you know? I will never buy anything LG again…Bye Bye Sears…..no wonder they are going out of business.
