LG-logoA New Jersey man says LG Electronics should be held responsible for certain models of LG refrigerators made with defective fans and ice makers.

Plaintiff Dennis Jung says defendant LG Electronics USA Inc. built certain models of its refrigerators with defective fans, defective ice makers, or both.

These defects make the LG refrigerators fail to conform to the company’s own representations, he claims, and he wants LG to take action to fix the alleged defects.

According to Jung, the fan defect prevents the fridge from keeping food sufficiently cold. The other defect affects the refrigerators’ ice maker, Jung says. On certain LG refrigerators equipped with an in-door ice maker, the dispenser allegedly becomes jammed and stops dispensing ice.

According to Jung’s LG refrigerators class action lawsuit, the defective fans start to fail by making an excessive ticking, vibrating or grinding noise. Then ice begins to build up inside the fan, ultimately clogging it and preventing the blades from rotating. Once that happens, cold air stops circulating inside the refrigerator, he says.

“The Fan Defect renders the Refrigerators useless because they become incapable of maintaining appropriate temperatures in the food compartments, even when they are used exactly in the manner directed by Defendant,” Jung says.

A similar buildup of ice prevents the ice maker on these LG refrigerators from dispensing ice, Jung claims. He says the dispenser allows the ice to partially melt, then refreeze into large, solid blocks of ice that can’t fit through the dispenser.

Jung says that LG Electronics has known about these two defects for years, yet has failed to properly fix them. LG has allegedly been receiving numerous complaints from owners of LG refrigerators reporting these alleged defects.

The plaintiff says he bought one of the defective LG refrigerators in August 2015. About 18 months later, he says, the fan defect caused his refrigerator to stop chilling his food. He reports losing $750 worth of fresh food that allegedly spoiled because of the fan defect.

He also says the ice maker in the same refrigerator tends to ice over and fails to dispense ice until he manually defrosts it and removes the excess ice.

Jung says the models of LG refrigerators affected by the fan defect are model numbers LFXC24726S, LFXS30726S, LFX32945ST, LFXS32766S, LFXS30766S, and LFX28968ST. Models allegedly affected by the ice maker defect are model numbers LFXC24726S, LFXS30726S, LFX32945ST, LFXS32766S, LFX28968ST, LFX21976ST, LFX25974ST, and LFXS30766S.

Some LG refrigerators at issue may have both defects, Jung claims.

Jung proposes to represent two nationwide plaintiff Classes – one that would cover all persons in the U.S. who since May 22, 2011 purchased LG refrigerators with the fan defect, and another that would cover owners of refrigerators with the ice maker defect purchased during the same period.

He also proposes two subclasses to cover Class Members from his home state of New Jersey.

The plaintiff seeks an award of damages, restitution and disgorgement, and reimbursement of his attorneys’ fees and costs of litigation. He is also asking for an injunction against LG Electronics continuing the practices complained of here and requiring the company to conduct a corrective advertising campaign.

Jung is represented by attorneys Janine L. Pollack, Matthew M. Guiney and Kate McGuire of Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman & Herz LLP.

The LG Refrigerators Fan Defect and Ice Maker Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Dennis Jung v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:17-cv-03664, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

UPDATE: The LG Refrigerators Fan Defect and Ice Maker Defect Class Action Lawsuit was dismissed on March 29, 2018, due to an individual settlement being reached.

Got new LG French door refrigerator from home depot 6 months ago 2-2021 and the part that you screw your water filter into broke. It took LG 2 weeks to get someone to come out to fix the problem and we were told this is a common problem with this fridge. Said it would take about 2 days to get the part and now it has been 4 weeks and still no ice and no cold water in my kitchen. Can not get LG to fix or to even answer the phone. Home Depot will not give us another refrigerator and the repair guy can’t help us so WHO CAN HELP? Please do not buy from LG OR HOME DEPOT.. no one will honor the warranty. Can anyone give me an answer. Even call the BBB today and they don’t even respond.

There is another lawsuit and extended warranty for certain models. You missed the first deadline, but if you have had issues after Setting of 2020. Look up LG Enhanced warranty

Paying over 2000. For an LG fridge and it only lasted 5.2 years before the compressor went. They will not cover since it passed the 5 year mark.

I have Wally wished this class action hadn’t been dismissed. We have had problems with the ice maker for years now. 3 service calls and it keeps breaking. We have to constantly manually defrost and unjam the ice maker. Now it just leaks water all over the fridge and floor. I HATE this ice maker!

  3. Charlotte Hnath says:

I also have the EXACT same problem with my LG in the door ice maker.
The ice freezes up and has to be unthawed to dispense ice. Paid $2700
4 years ago. I want LG to be held responsible for this defect. Repair my refrigerator free of charge or give me a new one. So tired of throwing money away on appliances that don’t last 5 years!!!

I have the same problem and AB may cannot get the parts to work that they order

    2. Flory Katz says:

Such BS. We bought a house last month with this refrigerator and my freezer stopped working. Just threw out hundreds of dollars worth of food. Such a shame. True shame. Luckily it is still under warranty but it was too late catching this issue and everything went into the garbage. More upset about the loss of food than that of the defect. I’m still screwed either way.

  5. FRANK VACCARO says:

Purchased a model LFXC24726D in June 2016. Required a service call for a fan problem as mentioned above on April 10 2017. Purchased the LG Care Plan $207 (2 years). Following that I purchased the 1 year plan $246 which expired 6/2020. I couldn’t afford the next 12 month plan which was in excess of $300. Since the contract expiration 6/2020 my ice maker has stopped working 3 times from ice forming at the mouth (exit point) of the receptacle. LG service calls are very expensive. Why hasn’t LG have a recall on the issues posted on this site? LG was formally Goldstar. Goldstar was sold at Sears as inexpensive below average appliances. In my opinion LG refrigerators aren’t any better than Goldstar was. I will never buy anything with a LG name again.

I sent in all the paperwork and still denied after 975. In repairs and food loss.

  9. Shelly Quarles says:

I don’t see a claim on an icemaker, but i bought a side by side LG 2 years ago in 2017 and I need a whole new icemaker. If there are any claims for this I would like to file one too. This is crazy. All they want to do is send someone here for more money. We can’t even find the diagram on the ice maker in our refrigerator. I called LG to make sure there was no recalls and as you know of course not. Need a recall though. I am very disgusted with it all. Just purchased a LG dishwasher too. Hope it is better than the fridge. I was going to purchase a washer and dryer too, but nope mark that brand off the list!! I just want my ice maker fixed for free…….Only 2 people who work all day use it. Should have last a lot longer than 2 years!

  10. Robin Johnson says:

I have the same problem with our 2 year old LG paid $2700.. the ice maker get jammed and leaks water. Just had to pay $1000. To replace compressor. Only 1/2 covered. Want all my money back!
