LG-logoA New Jersey man says LG Electronics should be held responsible for certain models of LG refrigerators made with defective fans and ice makers.

Plaintiff Dennis Jung says defendant LG Electronics USA Inc. built certain models of its refrigerators with defective fans, defective ice makers, or both.

These defects make the LG refrigerators fail to conform to the company’s own representations, he claims, and he wants LG to take action to fix the alleged defects.

According to Jung, the fan defect prevents the fridge from keeping food sufficiently cold. The other defect affects the refrigerators’ ice maker, Jung says. On certain LG refrigerators equipped with an in-door ice maker, the dispenser allegedly becomes jammed and stops dispensing ice.

According to Jung’s LG refrigerators class action lawsuit, the defective fans start to fail by making an excessive ticking, vibrating or grinding noise. Then ice begins to build up inside the fan, ultimately clogging it and preventing the blades from rotating. Once that happens, cold air stops circulating inside the refrigerator, he says.

“The Fan Defect renders the Refrigerators useless because they become incapable of maintaining appropriate temperatures in the food compartments, even when they are used exactly in the manner directed by Defendant,” Jung says.

A similar buildup of ice prevents the ice maker on these LG refrigerators from dispensing ice, Jung claims. He says the dispenser allows the ice to partially melt, then refreeze into large, solid blocks of ice that can’t fit through the dispenser.

Jung says that LG Electronics has known about these two defects for years, yet has failed to properly fix them. LG has allegedly been receiving numerous complaints from owners of LG refrigerators reporting these alleged defects.

The plaintiff says he bought one of the defective LG refrigerators in August 2015. About 18 months later, he says, the fan defect caused his refrigerator to stop chilling his food. He reports losing $750 worth of fresh food that allegedly spoiled because of the fan defect.

He also says the ice maker in the same refrigerator tends to ice over and fails to dispense ice until he manually defrosts it and removes the excess ice.

Jung says the models of LG refrigerators affected by the fan defect are model numbers LFXC24726S, LFXS30726S, LFX32945ST, LFXS32766S, LFXS30766S, and LFX28968ST. Models allegedly affected by the ice maker defect are model numbers LFXC24726S, LFXS30726S, LFX32945ST, LFXS32766S, LFX28968ST, LFX21976ST, LFX25974ST, and LFXS30766S.

Some LG refrigerators at issue may have both defects, Jung claims.

Jung proposes to represent two nationwide plaintiff Classes – one that would cover all persons in the U.S. who since May 22, 2011 purchased LG refrigerators with the fan defect, and another that would cover owners of refrigerators with the ice maker defect purchased during the same period.

He also proposes two subclasses to cover Class Members from his home state of New Jersey.

The plaintiff seeks an award of damages, restitution and disgorgement, and reimbursement of his attorneys’ fees and costs of litigation. He is also asking for an injunction against LG Electronics continuing the practices complained of here and requiring the company to conduct a corrective advertising campaign.

Jung is represented by attorneys Janine L. Pollack, Matthew M. Guiney and Kate McGuire of Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman & Herz LLP.

The LG Refrigerators Fan Defect and Ice Maker Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Dennis Jung v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:17-cv-03664, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

I purchased my refrigerator LFX28968ST sometime between April and July 2014 and began to have trouble with the icemaker about a year afterwards. Had to have a repair person out to get it working again but he told me, it’s working now but don’t know for how long. Also had to have service as the ice tray jammed and would not release to drop ice. Right now about once every 2 months it quits making ice and I have to turn it off and on several times, jiggle the ice tray and pray it will come back on and make ice. I have been sorely disappointed with this refrigerator as I thought that LG was a reputable company and sold a good product and for the money I spent, somewhere between $2,000-$2,500, I expected a better product.

Hello, I’m having the same problem with my refrigerator. LG will not back the warranty. They need to be held responsible.

  2. Kristen McLean says:

We have owned our LG refrigerator for less than 2 years and our ice maker constantly “freezes” up and requires it to be cleared of all ice to work again. Which is usually only once before we have to clear it up again. I agree with D. Jung that there are issues with the ice maker, I’m not sure about the fan issue. But maybe it’s part of the problem too. My search “LG icer maker freezes up” is what brought me to this site, the first google result I tried.

I am a fan of LG products and would like this “black eye” be remedied. LG figure out a fix and issue a recall – like the auto manufacturers do.

Sign me up, LG design flaws are tedious

  4. Matt says:

My 5-year-old LG fridge also just had it’s compressor go out and the ice maker failed, which caused a leak into the electronics. Unacceptable for a fridge that cost $2,500. Service technician wants over $1,00 to fix.

  5. Stephen Kern says:

We have been having the same vibration noise ice maker problem in an LG French door refrigerator less than 2 years old. Phone rep told us to turn it off 24 hours to “defrost”. This worked for about 6 months now making loud noise agian.

  6. Rosalie Gau says:

I also want to join the lawsuit my LG refer is 7 yrs old and the fan causes a terrible noise when the refer is closed and stops when the door is open. the repair man says the part to fix it is discontinued and not available. the refer is unrepairable and cannot be fixed. this refer cost of ver $2000.00 and like i said is only 7 yrs old. The freezer still works. it is a french door stainless refer. I want them to either replace the whole thing or fix it.

Although I purchased my LG single door from Aaron’s in Mayfield Ky and just paid it off this past 2018 march, I had it serviced for this identical problem via Aaron’s service center and a little over month later…i have the same problem again!! And this isn’t the first time ! We had same problem soon after we had it delivered!! When I asked to see the the service report, all of sudden ..they can’t find it??????? My freezer makes this horrible fan noise and it gets louder when the fridge is opened! I want to be in this class action lawsuit. This is too much coincidence for this many people to experience the same problem. I’m convinced the manufacturer is to blame.

  8. Sonia Myrick says:

I’d like to be part of this class action suit if still possible. Our French door LG with indoor ice dispenser is only 1 1/2 year’s old and it suddenly stopped working. We’ve been without a refrigerator for more than 2 weeks now and getting the run around from LG. They even had the nerve when I asked to speak to the supervisor that he had just gone to the hospital. I can’t help but that think that was a load of BS and wonder why I need to keep calling them. They obviously don’t stand behind their product or care that they are inconveniencing their customer. If I had the wherewithal I’d throw this crap out of my house! I’d like to get a refund and compensation first lost food so I can buy something other than an LG.

  9. Lydia says:

I am experiencing same/similar problem with Kenmore Elite model purchased in 2015. By Fall Sept 2017 I had an error screen problem requring replacement of refrig back panel, plus cost of warranty purchased to save money still cost me $600+ and no replacement for food lost.
Six months later, refrig bottom freezer/icemaker not cooling or making ice. Company diagnoses freezer fan this time as main culprit. Company says warranty program was not effective til Oct 2017, and it was more than 6 months so I could not save by not having pay deductible again for same/similar problem. In meantime, Im losing foods to spoilage as I wait more than a week for parts all the while paying monthly for warranty that will not reimburse me for lost food/beverages!! The warranty person I spoke to referred that a consumer with a broken frig/freezer would be somehow shady and nefarious by lying about food spoilage to try and get paid.

I’m told the replacement parts are in but I stilll hhave to wait 2 more days before the A Plus Appliance contractor can fix those issues. They do not promptly return calls and seem non-chalant about the priority need for refrigeration for health.
It seems we are experiencing a lack of common sense and good judgement in customer service nowadays. There is no problem solving that leads to any quality and effective productivity. It’s a shame Sears’ reputation is being potentially ruined by lack of ethics.

  10. Evelyn Rodriguez says:

This is insane!!! After reading these reviews I am completely appalled because I have been dealing with this same issue with our refrigerator NOT WORKING for almost 5 months from LG. The model I have is not mentioned above but I have model# LFX31925ST and it too has the same problem. I have had 3 technicians come out since December, and all three have diagnosed a different problem. The second technician replaced the compressor, the drier, and the condenser and it stopped working the next day. The third technician that came out said that the Yoder Loop is damaged and that it is a manufacturing problem that LG is fully aware of and then does not stand by its product to replace the unit for its customers. No amount of work will fix my problem, he stated the unit must be replaced! Out of all three, I believe and feel that third technician was being honest and seemed really frustrated with having to be the face of LG to angry customers. I have an insurmountable amount of phone calls, emails, back and forth and today I finaly spoke to someone in the “Escalation Department”. After much back and forth and letting her know that I will be their worst walking advertisment, and hire a Consumer law attorneys which is an expert in consumer protection laws, she then stated that she needed to get a supervisor that was even hire than her. Long story short, the supervisor was not reached because it was “end of day” and she “promised” to escalate this even further and give me a call within 3 – 5 business days which I declined. I asked her to call me within 3 days and give me an update and that this will determine my next step forward. I would like to know how I can be part of this class action suit against LG, the negligence and lack of concern for their customers is simply disgusting.
