LG-logoLG Electronics USA Inc. is facing a class action lawsuit alleging some of its washing machines have a “water hammering” defect that is caused by a washer valve that closes too fast and causes an annoying knocking noise in the pipes that can damage the pipes and lead to water leakage and related damage.

Plaintiffs Daniel Feinberg, John McBride, Sylvester Scarborough, David Low and Roberta Schiff filed the class action lawsuit yesterday in New Jersey federal court. They claim that the sudden closure of the washer valve causes a pressure spike behind the valve, causing powerful reverberation in the plumbing system until the shock waves are absorbed.

According to the LG washing machine class action lawsuit, the plaintiffs attempted to fix the washer valve defect by applying one or more washing machine arrestors, which are designed to stop banging pipes caused by valves that close too quickly. These water hammer arrestors reportedly cost between $11 and $17 each, plus the amount of time spent installing the water hammer arrestor (or cost of hiring a plumber to install the water hammer arrestor).

The plaintiffs allege LG has sold thousands of washing machines without disclosing to consumers the existence of the water hammering defect. According to the LG washing machine class action lawsuit, LG has known of the problem since at least September 2008 but purposely concealed its knowledge of the water hammering defect. Further, LG has allegedly refused to fix the defects, even when the repairs should have been covered under warranty.

The LG class action lawsuit points to information about the water hammering defect that was previously posted online by LG , but which is allegedly no longer available in the United States.

The plaintiffs say they would not have purchased LG washing machines, or would have paid much less for them, had they known about the water hammering defect.

The LG water hammering defect class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of the plaintiffs and a proposed Class of U.S. residents who purchased, not for resale, one or more of the affected LG washing machines. The plaintiffs also seek to represent a Florida Class, Georgia Class, New Jersey Class, New York Class and Pennsylvania Class.

The LG washing machine models named in the water hammering defect class action lawsuit include (but are not limited to): Model No. WM2501HWA, WM2650HRA, WT1701CV, and WM500HVA.

The LG washing machine class action lawsuit asserts claims for violations of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Federal Act, unjust enrichment, violation of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, violation of the Pennsylvania Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law, violation of the New York Consumer Protection Act, and violation of Georgia consumer protection laws.

The plaintiffs are represented by Benjamin F. Johns of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP, John Yanchunis of Morgan & Morgan Complex Litigation Group, Paul C. Whalen PC of Law Office of Paul C. Whalen PC, Francis J. “Casey” Flynn Jr. of The Law Offices of Francis J. “Casey” Flynn Jr. Esq., and Jasper D. Ward IV and Ashton Rose Smith of Jones Ward PLC.

The LG Washing Machine Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Daniel Feinberg, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:17-cv-06931-CCC-SCM, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

I bought an LG front loader in November 2021. As I had owned an LG for 15 years with no problems I decided to get another one. Ever since I got new one I get water hammer really at least 6 times during wash. At the beginning as it starts it bangs about 4 times, then when it’s filling up. I had plumber out and they gave me new taps thinking that was the problem but it didn’t fix it. I was wondering what type of arrestor I would buy for an LG. WV5-1408W and where I could buy it. I live in Brisbane Australia

Have the same issue. Stupid LG washing machine started creating water hammer in the pipes in the wall. Why it closes the valve so hard to stop the water is so silly. No other brand washing machine did it.

      Had to buy
Douststop Anti Hammer Water Control Valve – Bunnings Australia (Slows the water pressure from the tap)
Sioux Chief 20mm Chrome A Size Wash / Dish Water Hammer Arrestor – Bunnings Australia (This acts as a cushion to prevent the sudden pressure change going up the pipe.)

I tried the pressure reducer first as it was cheaper. Helped but not stopped. Then bought the water arrestor and helped but not fixed. Then put both the reducer then arrestor on at the same time and no longer any water hammer. Just make sure to also turn off your taps when not in use (although this should be done anyway in case the pipe to the washing machine bursts…..

Don’t open you water valves all the way. It’s a simple fix. When the washer starts to fill and you hear the banging noise, slowly close the valves until the noise goes away. Also rubber hoses will help. It’s not just Lg. All front load HE washers do this. They use a lot les water then a normal top load washer. So they pulse the water in to dampen the laundry instead of just opening full blast. So you do not need your water valves all the way open full blast.

Just developed this water hammer problem with LG Front Loader machine.
Is any action regarding this still going on????

  4. Lawrence Evans says:

I have da e issue severe be water hammer , have tried everything. Have had machine for several years but just started having hammer this year.

I’m dealing with a major slab leak combined with flooding and water damage as a result of burst water pipes caused by the LG WATER HAMMER syndrome. It’s going to cost thousands to bust up the slab and replace water lines not to mention the water damage under the house.

    1. John H says:

Same problem with mine for 5 years. 7-12 bams on every start up. My office is right below the washer and it is very distracting not to mention sounds as if it is breaking my pipes. REplaced both arrestors 3 times but the bumping started all over again immediately or after a few months.
I have not tried this but read a comment on youtube by a plumber who says the problem is caused by using the more expensive stainless steel hoses rather than rubber hose set. People install these perceiving they are less likely to burst than the older braided rubber hoses. However, the inside diameter of the stainless steel hose is slightly smaller than the rubber hose. This 1/8″ difference in diameter is small but will stop the hammer. My hoses are hard to replace so I have never done this. Has anyone tried this fix with success?

      1. Laura says:

I have a 2014 LG washer and I may try the rubber hose, or any other hose with a larger diameter. Let me know if you tried it yet?

  6. C. Hilderbrand says:

Seriously getting sick of my house going “BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG”. Who designs something like this? Why does the water have to cycle 200 times before it washes your clothes. Count me in on the class action suit if one opens up again. Will never buy LG again.

  7. Diane says:

I previously had a maytag front loader snd when it gave up the ghost a fee years ago did research and wrnt with lg. Nowhere did i find at the time anyone saying it sounded like someone would be operating a jackhammer. Water arrestors last 2 yrs tops before they have to be replaced and they do not eliminate the noise only muffle it some. Lg should be held responsible to correct this before someones pipes break snd flood a house. I will never buy anything lg again

  8. deena says:

Bought a machine this year and having the same problem. Seriously debating changing it out. Same response from them- call a plumber at our expense. If they send a technician, they’ll charge us. I wish I had just returned the machine.

  9. Scott says:

Also have the water hammer banging In two separate LG washers – until I found this website I thought it was part of design and normal. I find it unconscionable this is a defect to certain machine designs.

  10. Elsalee Williamson says:

I always heard LG appliances were so great, I have front load washer with the hammer noise and I also have a LG french door refrigerator with a build up ice problem behind Glide N Serve drawer with no help from LG, have had 2 repairmen claiming to have fixed problem to no avail, ice is building up again, my kitchen is all LG appliance and microwave is acting up now and not that old, LG won’t tell you anything unless you buy their contracts..

    1. Vic says:

Have you solved the problem ?
I had same issue but I fixed myself.
