LG Electronics USA Inc. is facing a class action lawsuit alleging some of its washing machines have a “water hammering” defect that is caused by a washer valve that closes too fast and causes an annoying knocking noise in the pipes that can damage the pipes and lead to water leakage and related damage.
Plaintiffs Daniel Feinberg, John McBride, Sylvester Scarborough, David Low and Roberta Schiff filed the class action lawsuit yesterday in New Jersey federal court. They claim that the sudden closure of the washer valve causes a pressure spike behind the valve, causing powerful reverberation in the plumbing system until the shock waves are absorbed.
According to the LG washing machine class action lawsuit, the plaintiffs attempted to fix the washer valve defect by applying one or more washing machine arrestors, which are designed to stop banging pipes caused by valves that close too quickly. These water hammer arrestors reportedly cost between $11 and $17 each, plus the amount of time spent installing the water hammer arrestor (or cost of hiring a plumber to install the water hammer arrestor).
The plaintiffs allege LG has sold thousands of washing machines without disclosing to consumers the existence of the water hammering defect. According to the LG washing machine class action lawsuit, LG has known of the problem since at least September 2008 but purposely concealed its knowledge of the water hammering defect. Further, LG has allegedly refused to fix the defects, even when the repairs should have been covered under warranty.
The LG class action lawsuit points to information about the water hammering defect that was previously posted online by LG , but which is allegedly no longer available in the United States.
The plaintiffs say they would not have purchased LG washing machines, or would have paid much less for them, had they known about the water hammering defect.
The LG water hammering defect class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of the plaintiffs and a proposed Class of U.S. residents who purchased, not for resale, one or more of the affected LG washing machines. The plaintiffs also seek to represent a Florida Class, Georgia Class, New Jersey Class, New York Class and Pennsylvania Class.
The LG washing machine models named in the water hammering defect class action lawsuit include (but are not limited to): Model No. WM2501HWA, WM2650HRA, WT1701CV, and WM500HVA.
The LG washing machine class action lawsuit asserts claims for violations of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Federal Act, unjust enrichment, violation of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, violation of the Pennsylvania Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law, violation of the New York Consumer Protection Act, and violation of Georgia consumer protection laws.
The plaintiffs are represented by Benjamin F. Johns of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP, John Yanchunis of Morgan & Morgan Complex Litigation Group, Paul C. Whalen PC of Law Office of Paul C. Whalen PC, Francis J. “Casey” Flynn Jr. of The Law Offices of Francis J. “Casey” Flynn Jr. Esq., and Jasper D. Ward IV and Ashton Rose Smith of Jones Ward PLC.
The LG Washing Machine Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Daniel Feinberg, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:17-cv-06931-CCC-SCM, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
UPDATE: The LG Class Action Says Washing Machines Have Water Hammering Defect was dismissed voluntarily by the plaintiffs on July 11, 2018. Top Class Actions will let our viewers know if a new complaint is filed.

I too purchased an LG front loader washing machine. 2016. The water hammering in the pipes is just terrible. We fitted 3 Arresters trying to fix the noise. The cost was close to $100. Still no better. Would never recommend anyone to buy LG Washer. LG should be made to fix this problem.
I was looking into a washing machine arrestor to fix the severe pipe hammering caused by my LG front loader and can’t find anything under $70 in Australia. I’m so totally pissed off and will never recommend an LG appliance to anyone
I purchased a LG front loader two years ago, the water hammering is so bad/loud that I feel it is going to ruin all my pipes.
We bought ours at least 5 years ago, but same problem and the water hammer arrestors helped but only for a while.
Our (Canadian) model WM3250HVA, $898. (Can) has the same problem. To make matters worse, we live in a condo, and when (not if) the pipes start to leak, walls have to be opened, and all repairs and cleanup will most likely be at our expense. Thankfully we are on the ground floor, so no condos below us to be flooded. We bought a stacked pair, so replacement will probably be two new machines. No more LG machines for us, even though we have invested in a total of 9 or 10 LG machines in the past.
I purchased LG washing machine model WM4370HKA on Jan,06,2020, I face same problem
With hammering sound, when I call LG customer support they said bring plumber and fix it yourself otherwise if we send technician we have to charge you. If they knows LG washing machine has this problem why they didn’t fix it during delivery time ? It’s only one month past from the purchase date and I am really disappointed from this products and the customer service at LG Canada.
I never recommend this kind of appliances to any one els.
Add me. Replaced valves and problem – Not solved?
I have an LG 2017 and we do have the hammering water pressure noise truly believe LG should fix the problem
I purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio Platinum HE Dueo. I thought I was buying the best I could for my clothes. I even bought the warranty. I didn’t think much of the annoying knocking noise until my water valve temperature gauge broke. Had a plumber fix this. He didn’t understand why it just broke. But he never heard the washing machine either. I started paying close attention and the lowest wall was shaking apart and still is. I call the warranty group in June of 2018. They came out. They ordered a new lid to replace the one that was on it because of the rust. They said they could not find the leak. But the machine has a leak and still does. When I purchased this I really didn’t think I would need another at my age. But I got scammed. Rust Bucket is what I have.
We bought an extra large capacity Cabrio also, and that is when our problems started. The Cabrio models should be included on a class action lawsuit. We have had multiple plumbers out to fix this, with multiple solutions tried, all to no avail. Why was the lawsuit dropped? I would like to add our name to any future class action lawsuit. At this point I think it’s going to be cheaper just to throw this POS out and buy a different washing machine. I think that Whirlpool should cover all the costs we have incurred due to this issue.
We purchased the WM4270 in 2015 and have tried water hammer arresters and pressure regulators without success. This is the only outlet creating water hammer, we never had it until the LG washer arrived.
Same with me. We had water damages after the washer burst out. The water burst occurred again. No proper response from LG team
Ditto, we are looking at other options at this time – possible replacement. I would have never purchased them if i knew this hammering was a part of it.
Tried everything with LG washer but huge hammering continues. Please include me in settlement.
