Hyundai recalls, class action lawsuits overview:

  • Who: Consumers recently targeted Hyundai Motor America with two class action lawsuits. The automaker also issued two recalls. Additionally, a class of vehicle owners asked a federal judge to approve a class action settlement with Hyundai and Kia.
  • Why: The class action lawsuits involve alleged paint and headlight defects. The recalls address a fuel pump defect and a loss of motive power..
  • Where: Consumers nationwide drive Hyundai vehicles.

Consumers recently targeted Hyundai Motor America with a pair of class action lawsuits and agreed to a class action settlement with the company. The automaker also announced two recalls..

The class action lawsuits involve alleged paint and headlight assembly defects, while the class action settlement ended claims Hyundai and Kia sold vehicles with defects that made them vulnerable to theft.

Hyundai also issued recalls for concerns involving a fuel pump defect and a sudden loss of motive power for certain Hyundai Genesis vehicles and model year 2020 and newer Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles, respectively.

Hyundai recalls new Elantra, Venue, Kona vehicles over power loss defect

Hyundai issued a recall for 13,511 model year 2024 Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles earlier this month over concerns they could experience a sudden loss of motive power due to a short circuit.

According to the recall notice, the automaker says it is concerned the can suffer an electrical short that potentially causes their malfunction indicator light to illuminate and/or the vehicle to suffer a sudden loss of motive power while in operation.

“Sudden, unexpected loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash, especially at high

speeds,” the recall notice states.

Hyundai recalls 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles over fuel pump concerns

Hyundai issued a recall for 31,440 of its 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles in April over concerns an impeller can become deformed under high heat, causing the fuel pump to shut down.

“A shutdown of the fuel pump could restrict fuel flow to the engine, resulting in a sudden reduction or loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Hyundai recall states.

The recall affects 12,763 model year 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, 14,414 2021-2023 Genesis GV80, 2,899 2021-2023 Genesis G80 and 1,364 2022-2023 Genesis G90 vehicles.

Vehicles have improperly sealed headlight assemblies, class action claims

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai in March over claims the automaker sold newer Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade vehicles with improperly sealed headlight assemblies.

The lawsuit claims improper sealing on the headlight assemblies of the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles allowed moisture to enter the headlights, causing them to dim over time.

“The headlight defect endangers drivers, pedestrians and other vehicles because it makes accidents wherein the vehicle strikes a person, animal or object in the roadway more likely,” the Hyundai class action states.

The consumer claims Hyundai sent technical service bulletins to authorized repair facilities about the alleged defect but failed to inform consumers about it.

Class action says paint on Genesis vehicles prematurely weakens, peels off

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai in March over claims the paint and color coat on its Genesis vehicles prematurely weakens and peels off, causing pricey repair costs.

The class action lawsuit claims the defect is preventable and that many Genesis owners simply choose to live with the issue as it allegedly costs between $200 and $1,800 to fix the defect.

“Those who have complained on sites like genesisowners.com and carcomplaints.com have stated that they reported the clear coat/paint damage and related issues to defendant, only to be ignored and have to take care of the damage themselves, with defendant taking little to no responsibility,” the Hyundai class action states.

Drivers ask judge to approve $145M Kia, Hyundai theft settlement

A class of Hyundai and Kia drivers asked a federal judge in California last month to grant final approval of a $145 million settlement to resolve claims they sold vehicles containing defects that left them vulnerable to theft.

The settlement includes at least $80 million in compensation for drivers who suffered losses from car thefts or attempted car thefts and a free software upgrade that will prevent the vehicles from being able to start without a key present.

“The settlement offers significant relief to class members who will receive virtually all the relief that plaintiffs originally sought in this first-of-its-kind action,” class members write in a motion filed April 18.

I had a 2014 Sonata that I was buying from a used car lot and they sent it to a repair shop because it was going into limp mode. I had no problems with it. Other than that it came to be the knock sensor and this repair shop said it had to be sent to Hyundai to fix When it went to the dealership, they claim they replace the knock sensor, but I only got 10 to 15 minutes down the road and had to call a tow truck and wait for them to get there to send it back to Hyundai where I was told a screw did not get Tightened they supposedly fixed the sensor again but this time told me I had a coolant leak. I questioned the coolant and they said they did not have the hose in stock. They sell me some flex hose but it was gonna cost me over $200 however I would’ve had to pay another $200 to put the proper hose on, but they said I should be all right. Just watch my temp again before I could even get home. I started having problems and I had to have it towed from my house back to the dealership. The dealership refused to take care of the leak, which it never had initially when it went out there, they claim they replaced the center a second time and did something that they claim was in protocol, but they did not want to replace the engine or put any money into it because I did not have a current warranty I told them I was not taking it off their lot and I called the place. I was buying it from and let them know and it said out there for months and then they sent a letter saying that they were going to charge an obscene amount for storage. The car lot that I was buying it from ended up going out and picking it up according to my credit report, my balance is completely satisfied however it got listed as a repo. I had other recalls on it. The knock sensor just happened to be the worst if Hyundai cannot work on a car without causing issues or if they’re not going to honor their recalls, I will never look again. I never did have a theft issue, although my car did fit in that category if I recall correctly, but as far as I’m concerned, Hyundai owes me
I would like to be added to any future Hyundai class actions with anything similar to this

My 2018 Hyundai Sonata has been parked at Coggin Hyundai since April 8th 2024, because Hyundai MC three times has refuse to repair or install a new engine that’s part of a recall and a won class action lawsuit for an extended warranty from 100k mileage to 120k mileage to repair our engine. Hyundai are saying that I missed three oil changes, which was taken care of but not at 7500 mil. according to the manual. February, 2024 I started having problems w/the engine but Service department said it wasn’t the engine until the lights go appearing on the dash, car loosing power, knocking and making noise.

I too have made multiple attempts to have the defective peeling paint repaired with no success. They basically ignore the situation as if I have caused it.

I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. I had the anti theft installed. Two months later, attempted theft left both passenger windows broken and the steering column. The alarm never went off. They were able to get the car started. It was still running when I discovered it.

My daughter’s Tuscan had one attempted theft and then the second time the thieves totaled her car

I have a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. I have about 4 or 5 recalls on my car. 2 of which include risks for spontaneous internal fires. The recalls that have effected my vehicle are for: the recent theft recall/security upgrade, lighter/charging port can potentially start an internal fire when used with the fix a flat kit that the car comes with, the sealant on under carriage of car was not done, and ABS break system can overheat and cause internal fire etc…. I have tried and tried to call my local Hyundai shops to get all of these taken care of and not one call back. I got a lady on the phone the first time, she got my VIN # and said she would check to make sure no extra parts needed to be ordered for repairs and said she’d call me back. I did not receive a call back. I called dozens of times after that and left voicemails…and nothing. I still need to get all of these fixed.
This is all not to mention the repairs I’ve had to pay for; the most recent one being due to the rust/undercarriage sealant recall. Parts of a pan were rusting off and getting in my rotars.

23 hybrid limited elantra it has had many recalls and now it turns off while driving and you can not do anything with it just turn it off hit the reset on the hybrid system and pray it starts again if you drive anymore than just under 1 hour it turns off again if you are on the highway you can not do anything but pray that the person behind you doesn’t hit you as you can not go or do anything it just shut off and yes abruptly too I just took it to the hyundai dealership and said I refuse to drive the unsafe car anymore and I wanted a pay off for the car..before it kills me or someone else like my son who had the same issues after he drove me to a doctor appointment this was again over the memorial day weekend when it shut down on I-4 in the middle of the highway abruptly we were almost hit and there would have been a pile up and who knows how many people would have been affected glad the person behind us was paying attention and didn’t hit us nice person who was very concerned about the vehicle just turning off with no real warning just hybrid shut down and it stops right on the spot

I have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra. Please add me.
There has been a trunk latch recall as well. I had an issue several years ago with this exact thing and had to have it replaced but I had to pay for it. My trunk actually has a dent in it due to trying to get the trunk open because luggage was in it and we had to get it out. My son had to take the seat out to get it.
