Hyundai makes numerous models of Hyundai and Kia brand vehicles with defective engines that use excessive amounts of oil, costing their owners huge sums of money, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

On Apr. 12, eight owners of Hyundai and Kia brand vehicles filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai Motor Co. in a California federal court, alleging violations of federal warranty laws.

The Hyundai excessive oil consumption lawsuit alleges that numerous models of the automaker’s vehicles are equipped with defective Nu, Gamma, Theta, Lambda and Kappa engines.

The defective engines allegedly use excessive amounts of oil, stall and eventually fail. The drivers say Hyundai should have issued a recall for the vehicles a long time ago but hasn’t.

As a result, thousands of Hyundai and Kia owners and lessees have allegedly been forced to constantly check the oil levels, and oil must be added to the engines more frequently than even the owner’s manuals recommend, Car Complaints reports.

The engine issue has flow-on effects like reduction in engine lubrication due to crankshaft submersion and gaskets and seals damage, which leads to oil leaks.

The plaintiffs also claim that oil in their vehicles migrates to places where it shouldn’t be, damaging the combustion and exhaust systems.

This allegedly causes “abnormal wear of engine parts, oversaturation of carbon and deposits of oil sludge, ultimately requiring a costly engine rebuild or replacement.”

Automaker should honor warranty claims outside terms, Hyundai class action says

The plaintiffs allege that Hyundai should honor customers’ warranty claims even when the warranties have expired. 

According to the lawsuit, Hyundai can’t adequately repair the oil consumption problems and doesn’t offer any reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs caused by the issue.

The class action states customers must suffer through long wait times for replacement parts, “and in most cases do not receive required engine replacements.”

The cars with the allegedly faulty engines include the 2012-2020 Hyundai Elantra, 2009-2018 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, 2019-2021 Hyundai Kona, 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade, 2010-2012 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2009-2010 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Sonata, 2011–2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2010-2013 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Tucson, 2011-2021 Hyundai Veloster, 2020-2021 Hyundai Venue, 2010-2021 Kia Forte, 2017-2020 Kia Niro, 2011-2020 Kia Optima and Optima Hybrid, 2012-2021 Kia Rio, 2011-2020 Kia Sorento, 2012-2021 Kia Soul, 2011-2020 Kia Sportage, 2018-2021 Kia Stinger and 2022 Kia K5.

Meanwhile, Hyundai has expanded its recall of vehicles with an exploding seat belt part issue that has caused multiple injuries to include 6,240 of its 2021-2022 Elantra and 2020 Accent vehicles. 

The plaintiffs are represented by Nye, Stirling, Hale & Miller LLP, Sauder Schelkopf LLC and Walsh, PLLC.

    My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe burns oil. 2000 miles left in my oil change and I’m almost out of oil. Have to check oil almost every week.

      I also have that issue. I’m financing a 2014 elantra GT and I swear that I know when it needs oil by hearing the ticking. Im trying to research how to fix the issue with hundai but it seems they are not willing to fix it.

    I have a 2014 hyundai sonata and it started to burn oil at about 100,000 miles. Took it to dealer and they told me more then once that it was normal for this car to eat so much oil! I have never heard of such B.S. in my life. I’ve changed the pcv valve 3 times, didn’t help at all. I just want them to own up and give me a new engine!

    2015 Hyundai Sonato 2.4 liter uses accessive amount of oil only 38,000 miles on it .

    I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. It has just reached 140,000 miles. I’ve had to have it looked at by multiple mechanics thinking there was an oil leak until I came across this page.

    I most recently managed to go through 4 quarts of oil in less than 1500 miles, and have documented proof. I am interested in this case for sure!

    I currently have a 2016 Hyundai Senada that now has engine leaking bowel gas is leaking CV axle leaking and a slew of problems that they have left prolong for six months. I didn’t let me know what was going on to the point that my car smell like it’s catching on fire. Every time I turn on the car the car is currently sitting at a dealership and now I’m being price to fix the car after these little problems and I kept complaining about the burning smells and complaining about smelling fumes in my car that were causing me to choke and get massive headaches, I was told that they never saw anything at first but now my damages are so severe on my car that they said these were left untouched and never fixed yet every time I got my oil changed and got a diagnostics they never told me anything was wrong with my car. Finally when I got bad enough in my car stuck to smoke it was catching on fire it’s all you have all these problems and they’re all dealing with the engine leaking. The oil is leaking all over the spark plugs all over the CV axle all over the valve gaskets to where I now have Damages up to $3000 and being asked to fix it also I’m in a loaner that they’re not asking to get back because they claim them out of my warranty but at the time that the damages first occurred I was within my warranty but they never told me I had the damages they let them prolong and get worse to where when I was out of my warranty I can no longer fix it I also didn’t know about the recalls for these engines and the excessive oil consumption because I kept complaining about that too and how oil which is leak everywhere but no one ever listen to me so here it is my loaner is due back on March 29, 2023 I’m not sure if there’s going to be a possible renewal and I’m about to be without a car to get around to take my child to school and for me to get to work I really need help please I am desperate right now because the fact that they let months go by them negligence is insane to me and the fact that you could’ve killed me in my car and never say nothing my car smell it was catching on fire I have fire marshal‘s come to my house because of it And also my CV axle is leaking one long-term can cause me to get into severe accident. Please help me out I’m stressed out.

    I have a 2014 Santa Fe Sport Turbo 2.0 Limited and it is at 190k now, the oil consumption is crazy nowadays, been regularly changing oil at 5k since day 1, and the oil burning started around 100k, I have to check and top up the oil every week as there is no light indicates when oil level is low, last month was worth, after driving around 2.5k my oil level stick showed nothing, dry stick, had to fill up almost 1 gallon… The Dealership does not know what’s going on, car runs smoothly with no problem as it’s been on every maintenance. Not sure what to do…

    I have oil consumption issue since 2021 on my 2018 Hyundai Tucson. They had to fix my transmission summer of 2021 and they first one they put in went bad after a month then the out another one in. Car still consumed oil and ran bad. They did my catalytic converter in the fall of 2022. As of March 2023 did three oil consumption test and in Hyudnai eyes they are normal. I should not have to put in 5 quarts of oil between changes. Corporate keeps telling me to go back and the dealership says they can’t help. New to do an engine de combustion cleaning for $600 plus. After three years of numerous emails and calls to them how my car runs. Never received any lights but once my engine light came on few seconds and my oil light flashes but a second here and there when oil is low. I had to go to two dealerships because the first would not help me. It took a year for them to help fix my catalytic converter. Now I have to fight why my car is consuming so much oil. It sucks that you’re still paying for a car that runs like crap. I don’t want to break down on the side of the road. I am in NJ and looking for help here.

      Just an informational note for you. If you have any vehicle that is under 100000 miles on it and the catalytic converter goes bad, by law, they have to replace it for free, no questions asked. They should have replaced that immediately. The converter, O2 sensors, and most of the other issues come from the oil burning clogging them up.

    My daughter is having the same issue with her 2016 Chevy Equinox and GM will not do anything because they have no information on other incidents happening even though other models had rhe same issue and it is the same engine.
