baby powder ovarian cancerJohnson & Johnson is facing a new ovarian cancer talcum powder lawsuit from a grieving woman filing on behalf of her late mother. The woman filed the ovarian cancer talcum powder lawsuit soon after discovering the manufacturing company may have known about the dangerous nature of the talcum powder products for years, but failed to warn the consumers.

Plaintiff Regina G. is filing this ovarian cancer talcum powder lawsuit on behalf of her mother Ruth S., who allegedly died from using talcum powder products. Ruth regularly used Johnson & Johnson talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes for years, which allegedly resulted in ovarian cancer development.

At all times relevant, Ruth used the talcum powder products for typical uses and did not deviate from product instructions. Even with this diligence, Ruth still reportedly developed ovarian cancer and was diagnosed with the disease on Aug. 17, 2015.

Ruth later died from ovarian cancer on Oct. 29, 2015, with her daughter finding out about the link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder soon after.

Overview of Ovarian Cancer Talcum Powder Lawsuit

Regina states her mother relied on faulty marketing statements provided by Johnson & Johnson, which repeatedly stated that talcum powder was safe to use for feminine hygiene purposes. The company allegedly marketed its talc-based products specifically to women.

Talcum powder is used for a number of hygiene purposes including reduction of wetness and odor. Due to these marketing statements, Ruth and many other women lined their undergarments with talcum powder for personal hygiene reasons.

This allowed for talcum powder particles to enter the woman’s body and eventually embed themselves in the ovaries which can increase the risk of ovarian cancer. These talc particles can remain dormant for years before showing any symptoms, potentially resulting in late diagnosis and limited treatment options.

Johnson & Johnson allegedly knew about this correlation for years with over 20 different scientific inquiries suggesting a link. The first major study to observe a link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer was conducted in the 1980s, but scientists had suspected it since the 1970s.

It is important to note that some talc in its natural form contains asbestos, which is a confirmed carcinogenic. In addition, the American Cancer Society states that talcum powder may increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

Even though Johnson & Johnson was made aware of these studies, the company allegedly made no effort to inform their consumers and did not add any warning on the talcum powder product labels.

Regina states her mother never would used the company’s talcum powder products if Ruth had known about the alleged association. Regina is filing this ovarian cancer talcum powder lawsuit seeking multiple damages, including wrongful death and failure to warn.

This Ovarian Cancer Talcum Powder Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-05920-LDW-ARL, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
