GM Front Airbag Defect RecallOver the last year, General Motors has found itself in bit of trouble due to its frontal airbag recall defect on many of its late model vehicles.

GM recently announced that they would be recalling approximately 3.64 million vehicles manufactured between 2014 and 2017 for frontal airbag defects.

The main issue is with the sensing and diagnostic module in these vehicles which controls airbag and pretensioners deployment.

The module allegedly contains a frontal airbag recall defect in software. This defect has prompted a recall of nearly 4 million cars because it has been found that the airbag may not deploy correctly in the case of a collision.

The GM frontal airbag recall defect has been linked to 3 injuries as well as one fatality.

GM has said that this defect might counteract the ability of the frontal airbags to deploy in certain “rare circumstances when a crash is preceded by a specific event impacting vehicle dynamics.”

When GM realized earlier this year that they would have to recall the newer model trucks, cars and SUVs, they predicted they could lose $550 million as a result.

This recall affects the airbags that are made by Takata. Takata is one of the world’s largest auto safety equipment suppliers. However, since 2008, Takata airbags have been connected with problems.

A spokesman for GM notes that GM considers their vehicles “safe to drive,” however opened up an investigation in June 2016 to look at the frontal airbag recall defect.

Frontal Airbag Recall Defect Vehicles

The cars that are affected by this frontal airbag recall defect include the following vehicles:

  • 2014-2016 model year Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet SS and Spark EV
  • 2014-2017 model year Chevrolet Corvette, Trax, Caprice PPV and Silverado 1500; Buick Encore; and GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2015-2017 model year Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and Silverado HD; GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra HD; and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

GM says that they will notify all affected customers and will update the software free of charge for customers. According to GM’s website, car owners can also look up their vehicle’s VIN number on the GM website to see if their vehicle has the frontal airbag recall defect.

Vehicles manufactured after August 24, 2016 have GM’s newer software and are not part of the recall.

If you own one or more of the GM vehicles listed in the recall, you may be able file legal action. Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer to determine their eligibility for a frontal airbag recall defect lawsuit.
