Ford F150 Brake Problems Might Affect Later Models Not Covered by RecallConsumers are warning that F150 brake problems aren’t limited to the 2013 and 2014 models that have been subject to a recall. Owners and lessees allege other models of 2013-2018 Ford pickups have the same F150 brake problems, but Ford has not included these other models or later vehicles among the recalled trucks.

On May 24, 2016, Ford issued a recall of certain models of its 2013 and 2014 F150 pickup trucks manufactured between Aug. 1, 2013 and Aug. 31, 2014 that are equipped with 3.5-liter engines.

Ford said the master cylinder rear cup seal might roll, causing brake fluid to leak from the main reservoir into the break booster, the mechanism that allows the driver to obtain braking action without placing too much force upon the brake pedal.

This loss of brake fluid from the primary reservoir leads to a complete loss of functionality in the front brakes, which could increase the risk of an accident. If all of the brake fluid has been lost, the brakes can fail without warning, which means drivers could fail to stop at red lights and stop signs if they are unable to get the brakes to respond.

Under the recall, dealerships will replace the brake master cylinder and the brake booster if that component also needs to be replaced, free of charge. However, Ford is facing allegations that dealers are replacing some of the defective parts with new parts that have the same defect.

F150 Brake Problems Plague Newer Pickups

A driver of a 2015 Ford F150 pickup filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last month after his truck lost brake power. The Tennessee driver said he was lucky he noticed the loss of power in his driveway when the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. An inspection of the truck’s master cylinder found the brake fluid was almost completely gone.

Another driver said he was vacationing with his wife in Georgia when the brakes on his 2015 Ford F150 failed. He claims the brakes have failed since then, and the only indication anything was wrong was a brake light warning lit up on the dashboard.

The NHTSA reportedly has received similar complaints regarding 2015 and 2016 Ford F150 brake problems from consumers in 38 states, according to an investigation by WSMV News 4 of Nashville, Tenn.

The NHTSA sent Ford a letter on Sept. 18, 2018 asking for information regarding model year 2015 through 2018 Ford F150 brake problems so that the NHTSA can evaluate the “alleged defect.” The letter addresses the following circumstances surrounding F150 brake problems:

  • Brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster;
  • Allegations the brake warning lamp turns on and/or low fluid level in one or both chambers of the brake fluid reservoir; and/or
  • Increased brake pedal movement, including allegations of the pedal going to the floor, accompanied by reduced brake effectiveness.

If you own or lease a 2013-2018 Ford pickup truck, you could be eligible to participate in this lawsuit investigation regarding F150 brake problems.

When backing into parking space or even pulling in facing forward the brake pedal gets extremely hard to push the brake pedal. Have to it the truck in neutral to get enough vac to stop!!!! 2014 f-150 with 65000 miles.

2018 f150 5.0 fading brakes at 8,000 miles are you kidding?

Our 2012 F150 has had this happen twice. Currently this second time is the worse. The brake pedal will have pressure then suddenly lose it and go straight to the floor. The master cylinder is a little low on fluid and checked all the lines and calipers again no sign of a leak. Would be great if Ford would figure out how to fix this and include all that are effected.

2016 F150 with 5.0. Not losing fluid but no matter what once the engine starts peddle goes the floor. There is no air in my lines. Replaced brakes on front passenger 3 times and the caliper. Keeps wearing out that front brake. Master cylinder is next I guess. Makes me feel better that there’s a ton of people with the peddle problem

Mine just went out on a 2018 F150 Sport. Only 42K miles but now out of warranty. How can they get away with this when they now they are defective. My brother-in-law’s 2017 3.5L ecoboost lost the trubo’s at 30K miles. They tried to tell him it wasn’t covered and he would have to pay $3,600. He complained enough to get them to cover it. SMH!

My 2015 Lariat 3.5L failed as I was hauling a trailer with a vehicle on it. Fortunately I was able to stop the vehicle. Same problem with the master cylinder leaking into the brake booster confirmed by dealer.

Mine happened tonight. 2016 f150 EcoBoost platinum. I was pulling into my driveway when the brakes went to the floor. My dad and i bleed the brakesand drive it a quarter of the mile just top have the reservoir empty again and the engine stall. When i restarted the engine, brake fluid sputtered out the tailpipe.

My situation starts with an Emergency trip to our Pediatrician for my 2yr old son & my “NO BRAKES” on
2016 F150 3.5L ECO Boost Lariat SuperCab truck!

On Mon, Sept 30th, 2019 my husband, my 2 yr old, my 6 month old & myself, were traveling to our Pediatrician for Emergency check-up appt. During our trip, (my husband driving) we got the dashboard notification and chime for “Brake Fluid Level Low.” Within a matter of seconds my husband started losing break pressure. We’re in rush hour traffic with no where to pull over & NO Brakes!! My husband was able to avoid hitting the car in front and swerved into an entranceway to private property. He then slammed on the EMERGENCY BRAKE (thank god that still worked) to avoid hitting the metal gate to the private property!
Not for nothing, but if FORD has an issue with its breaking system, they need to suck up the loss and have a recall for all years being reported!
We currently own *2* F150 3.5L Lariat Eco Boost SuperCab Trucks. One was purchased used 2013. The other was “brand new” off the lot 2016. The brand new one with Never No issues is the one that lost brakes! Should we expect the same issue to happen to the 2013?!
Calling FORD DEALERSHIP in the AM. They service our trucks and know we maintain our vehicles. Cant wait to hear what excuses they have for us.
    Smh
*Son did make it LATE to appt and is currently ok. Thank God father-in-law was close by to take us to appt.

2015 just failed. Screw domestic manufacturers, they don’t give a shit about your life. Only the bottom line.

  10. Chris Smiseck says:

Mine just happened: 2016 f150 3.5l ecoboost. Coming down off a mountain in WV. Made it down safe, got fluid put it in and about 4 miles later with hardly any breaking, the fluid was gone again. Now I’m stranded on labor day weekend in WV trying to get to Ohio.

      Stupid auto correct: braking*
