Ford F150 Brake Problems Might Affect Later Models Not Covered by RecallConsumers are warning that F150 brake problems aren’t limited to the 2013 and 2014 models that have been subject to a recall. Owners and lessees allege other models of 2013-2018 Ford pickups have the same F150 brake problems, but Ford has not included these other models or later vehicles among the recalled trucks.

On May 24, 2016, Ford issued a recall of certain models of its 2013 and 2014 F150 pickup trucks manufactured between Aug. 1, 2013 and Aug. 31, 2014 that are equipped with 3.5-liter engines.

Ford said the master cylinder rear cup seal might roll, causing brake fluid to leak from the main reservoir into the break booster, the mechanism that allows the driver to obtain braking action without placing too much force upon the brake pedal.

This loss of brake fluid from the primary reservoir leads to a complete loss of functionality in the front brakes, which could increase the risk of an accident. If all of the brake fluid has been lost, the brakes can fail without warning, which means drivers could fail to stop at red lights and stop signs if they are unable to get the brakes to respond.

Under the recall, dealerships will replace the brake master cylinder and the brake booster if that component also needs to be replaced, free of charge. However, Ford is facing allegations that dealers are replacing some of the defective parts with new parts that have the same defect.

F150 Brake Problems Plague Newer Pickups

A driver of a 2015 Ford F150 pickup filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last month after his truck lost brake power. The Tennessee driver said he was lucky he noticed the loss of power in his driveway when the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. An inspection of the truck’s master cylinder found the brake fluid was almost completely gone.

Another driver said he was vacationing with his wife in Georgia when the brakes on his 2015 Ford F150 failed. He claims the brakes have failed since then, and the only indication anything was wrong was a brake light warning lit up on the dashboard.

The NHTSA reportedly has received similar complaints regarding 2015 and 2016 Ford F150 brake problems from consumers in 38 states, according to an investigation by WSMV News 4 of Nashville, Tenn.

The NHTSA sent Ford a letter on Sept. 18, 2018 asking for information regarding model year 2015 through 2018 Ford F150 brake problems so that the NHTSA can evaluate the “alleged defect.” The letter addresses the following circumstances surrounding F150 brake problems:

  • Brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster;
  • Allegations the brake warning lamp turns on and/or low fluid level in one or both chambers of the brake fluid reservoir; and/or
  • Increased brake pedal movement, including allegations of the pedal going to the floor, accompanied by reduced brake effectiveness.

If you own or lease a 2013-2018 Ford pickup truck, you could be eligible to participate in this lawsuit investigation regarding F150 brake problems.

Happened to me on my 2015 F150 38,584 miles!! Exact same problem everyone else is reporting. Service manager at the dealership told me he had had three failures come in in the last few weeks just like mine on 2015’s.

My master cylinder just went out as well on 7/9/2019. It’s a 2016 F150. $1100 to replace it along with the brake boosters, flush, etc. I have about 72K miles and always babied the truck. Very disappointed.

  3. Martin says:

Had the same thing happen on my 2014 F-150… Apparently it was built 2 weeks after the cut off date for the recall (Sept 13, 2014, and the date from the Dearborn plant only went to Aug. 31, 2014). Camping on the long weekend with the family and went to pull out of our campsite Monday at lunch and all the fluid was gone…. had a friend go to the truck stop to get a quart of brake fluid, and it also all leaked out in about 30 minutes. Went through another 2 quarts driving to the truck stop so that we could get a tow back into town. I’ve owned vehicles for over 20 years and this was the first time I’ve ever had any issues around brake fluid. Truck only has 91,000 km on it. How can I join this? It happened to me too! Lost my break fluids in the reservoir and almost got into accident and the system is only 3 years & after 55,269 Miles for a 2016 F-150 Lariat SCrw, it costs me $1100 to replaced the date thing since according to them it’s not under warranty anymore, I want to join this action you can email me back on what to do next.

  5. Ronald McClelland says:

The problem is not limited to the F-150. I experienced the exact same problem on my 2016 Expedition. The brake fluid warning light came on followed by a loss of braking effectiveness. After having my Expedition towed to a local repair shop I was informed that: “The brake booster was full of brake fluid that had leaked out of the Master Cylinder.” The repair included replacing the Booster, the Master Cylinder, Pin, and the Check valve/sensor.

  6. Juan Puentes says:

The master cylinder just went out on my 2016 F150 with only 63k miles.
On the way to work this morning I had a low brake fluid message pop up and then all of a sudden my brake pedal got really soft. I was able to make it to work and then started to inspect the brake lines to see if I had a leak. Everything looked good and was bone dry. So I filled the fluid revisor up and the fluid message disappeared but after I stepped on my brake pedal the brake fluid message popped up again. That’s when I called my mechanic to come out and diagnose the problem. Well he ended up finding out that the master cylinder was shooting all the fluid into the brake booster. He then started calling the Dallas area Ford part houses to see who had a master cylinder in stock but just about all the Ford part houses where sold out, this must be a common problem..
A few hours and hundreds of dollars later I’m back on the road.
Ford needs to put out a recall before someone gets hurt or loses their life.

  7. Hugh says:

Happened to me on Saturday 11 May. Complete brake loss without any warning on a 2014 F150. Cost me $1100 .

  8. Charles E Etling says:

My wife and i experienced the same issues listed above. Driving down the interstate and all of a sudden low brake fluid level warning. We pulled over added fluid. Started out of parking lot got same warning again. added total of about a quart of fluid. Then took to dealer where they say we need new master cylinder and brake booster. parts and labor would be almost a thousand dollars.

  9. Dwayne Owens says:

2005 brake system replace then they brake pedal went straight to the floor after bleeding the brakes

  10. Melanie Moser says:

So we are currently experiencing the same problem with our 2015 Ford 150. The EXACT same problem with master cylinder leak and brake booster. Is costing us over a thousand dollars stranded us in Sarasota. We live in Ormond Beach, FL where we purchased the vehicle.
