An asbestos mesothelioma trial conducted in Madison County, Il. has recently adjourned in the courtroom of Associate Judge Stephen Stobbs.
The asbestos mesothelioma trial put Hennessy Industries on the spot due to numerous allegations of asbestos exposure related injuries.
Mesothelioma is a very rare form of lung cancer, specifically caused by asbestos exposure. This differs from traditional lung cancer, as the cancer develops in the mucus lining of lungs rather than directly in the organs.
The plaintiff parties in the asbestos mesothelioma trial, Janet and Stanley U., alleged the company had caused Stanley to be exposed to asbestos. The couple is from Michigan, and claims their asbestos exposure was directly caused by the company’s materials.
Janet and Stanley had filed their asbestos mesothelioma lawsuit in March 2013, claiming Stanley had been exposed to asbestos containing products during his employment. From the 1960s to 1974 Stanley had worked at several different automobile dealerships, and teaching auto technology class at different schools from 1975 to present.
During the asbestos mesothelioma trial, Stanley claimed he had experienced asbestos exposure while using Hennessy brake grinders. Stanley was ultimately diagnosed with mesothelioma, and has had to contend with the consequences of his health condition.
Overview of Asbestos Mesothelioma Problems
Mesothelioma can take up to 50 years before developing into a stage where symptoms start showing, often resulting in a latent diagnosis. For this reason, numerous asbestos mesothelioma claims have been filed over the years by veterans and former laborers that worked in different manufacturing jobs.
Asbestos was popularly used before the 1980s for various manufacturing purposes, like insulation, due to its chemical and fire resistant qualities. The peak of asbestos popularity was reached during World War II, after being implemented into many United States Navy ships.
Even though asbestos is harmless when dormant, it can be very dangerous when released into the air.
Due to the serious health concerns associated with asbestos exposure, manufacturing companies are obligated to protect consumers and employees. Companies can do this by providing disclosures, giving out protective equipment, and warning tenants in buildings that may contain asbestos.
Failing to warn consumers or employees of asbestos risks could result in companies being found liable for any long term health effects. This was the case with Stanley’s asbestos mesothelioma trial, as the couple alleges the injuries could have been avoided.
