Costco Kirkland baby wipes class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Larisa Bullard and Mila Corrigan filed a class action lawsuit against Costco Wholesale Corp. and Nice-Pak Products Inc.
  • Why: Bullard and Corrigan claim Costco marketed and sold Kirkland-branded fragrance free baby wipes containing unsafe levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Costco markets and sells Kirkland-branded fragrance free baby wipes containing unsafe levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Larisa Bullard and Mila Corrigan claim Costco represents its Kirkland Signature Baby Wipes, Fragrance Free baby wipes product is made with naturally derived ingredients despite allegedly containing PFAS.

“Direct PFAS exposure to infants and babies from defendant’s wipes pose a health risk, the likes of which plaintiffs and class members sought to avoid by purchasing defendant’s plant-based, natural-material, toxin-free products for their babies,” the Costco class action says.

Bullard and Corrigan want to represent a nationwide class along with New York and California subclasses of consumers who purchased the Kirkland Signature Baby Wipes, Fragrance Free baby wipes product during the statute of limitations period.

Testing shows Costco baby wipes contain ‘significant’ PFAS levels, class action claims

Bullard and Corrigan claim independent research conducted by their counsel through a Department of Defense laboratory discovered the presence of unsafe levels of PFAS in the Kirkland baby wipes.

“Defendants market the product as conferring certain health, safety and use benefits, when testing demonstrates that the product actually contains significant levels of unsafe, toxic PFAS chemicals,” the Costco class action says.

Bullard and Corrigan claim Costco—along with product manufacturer Nice-Pak Products Inc.—are guilty of negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment or omission, fraud, unjust enrichment and breach of express warranty and violating New York General Business Law and California’s False Advertising Law, Consumers Legal Remedies Act and Unfair Competition Law

The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for themselves and all class members.

A consumer filed a separate class action lawsuit against Costco earlier this month over claims the company falsely promises to disclose if an item is cheaper in its store than on its website.

Yes! My husband and I have been buying these Kirkland wipes for our daughter since she was newborn. She is now almost 3 years old. We thought they were the safest & best price for the product of advertisement. It’s unfortunate and devastating that we could be hurting her, & had no idea.

  2. Samuel Cho says:

My daughter was getting horrible rashes, to the point they would blister. Once we stopped using the wipes it went away. This just confirms our suspicion.

  3. Shawn Connor says:

We’ve been using Kirkland wipes for years. My 2 youngest boys got rashes way more than our older girls ever did. But this makes sense, we never used costco wipes with our girls. We switched everything from laundry detergents to baby wash with little change.

  4. Maddie says:

My baby had a bad rash we thought was from diapers, but turns out it was from the wipes! Stopped using them and got anti fungal cream and the rash went away… makes sense now. Rash started as soon as we used these

    SAME HERE!
My daughter is 9 months and has always had a constant rash, we tried everything but changing the wires because we thought they were harmless. I just finally happened to switch her diapers and wipes to pampers because that’s what we used when she was preme and never had a problem. Within 2 days her blistered butt Is finally clear!
I can’t believe my daughter had to go through all that pain over some wipes that were supposed to be safe.

  6. Sydney Woods says:

This all makes sense.. I never thought to change my daughters wipes because I thought they were safe. My 1 year old daughter had like a 2 month rash that never got better untill I ran out of my wipes and switched to Hugies. We went to urgent care and it wasn’t getting better with all the creams. It just now cleared up. This is heartbreaking to think all I needed was to switch wipes. You can’t trust anything anymore.

Us too! My Son kept getting a diaper rash. We switched diapers, it was still bad. Switched to the Rico wipes, honest, or wet wipes and started to heal. Back to Kirkland wipes rash back. We had to get a fungal cream from Pediatrian and use aloe vera to clear up. Poor thing it was raw.

  8. Justine Fruits says:

My 1 month old has been struggling with diaper rash. Used Kirkland, he broke out in a rash. Used another brand and it cleared up a bit. Then we switched back to Kirkland and ended having to go to urgent care to get antibacterial ointment. It’s clearing up, but now I don’t trust any wipes. I have been using plain paper towels and a water bottle.

I’ve used these for a couple years! Within 6 months I kept having rashes that were extremely itchy and painful. I could not point out the cause until recently! I changed my diet. Used steroid cream. Everything. It never dawned on me that the wipes were causing the issues until one day I stopped. And within a week it all went away! This news is alarming and scary!

  10. Lindsey Manning says:

Have used these for the last two years on my daughter. Never had a reaction but I’m horrified by these claims. We will not be purchasing in the future. Awful.
