A worker installs panels beige siding on the facade of the houseCertainTeed Corp. and its parent company, Saint-Gobain Corp., were hit with a class action lawsuit alleging the vinyl siding produced by the companies is defective.

Lead plaintiffs allege in their class action lawsuit that vinyl siding sold under the brand name “CertainTeed” blisters and degrades under normal use. The class action includes pictures of warped and wavy siding on the plaintiffs’ houses.

The plaintiffs claim the CertainTeed vinyl siding on their homes began to degrade, blister, warp, melt and deform; however, when the plaintiffs contacted the company, they were allegedly told the company would not perform repairs because the damage was caused by “heat distortion” from glass reflection.

“CertainTeed vinyl siding fails to conform to the public’s reasonable expectation of the product’s durability and longevity, and the company’s promise of ‘Quality made certain, satisfaction guaranteed,’” the CertainTeed class action lawsuit states.

The plaintiffs, residents of various states, including New Work, Florida, Minnesota, Main, South Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee, allege that CertainTeed vinyl was marketed to them as able to withstand the extremes of weather and atmosphere. They also note that the siding comes with a lifetime warranty that is transferable to other owners.

“Defendants’ vinyl siding warranty provides that if CertainTeed determines, in its sole discretion, that its siding products have a manufacturing defect under the terms of the warranty, defendants will either (1) pay to repair, replace, refinish, or coat any siding product it determines has a manufacturing defect, or (2) refund the amount paid by the original property owner for the siding products plus the cost of the labor of the original installation,” states the lawsuit.

According to the CertainTeed class action, the manufacturer is responsible for the damage caused to their siding under the terms of their warranty.

“The CertainTeed Limited Lifetime Warranty provides warranty coverage against manufacturing defects, including but not limited to ‘blistering,” allege the plaintiffs. “The Warranty also covers damage caused to the vinyl siding by ‘normal exposure conditions,’ and in its Limitations section, makes no mention of any warranty exclusion relating to non-flame heat from any source. The Warranty specifically contemplates that the vinyl siding will be subject to ‘exposure to sunlight and extremes of weather and atmosphere.’”

Further, say the plaintiffs, the makers of CertainTeed vinyl siding never verified that the damage was caused by any additional source of heat or reflections off glass. Nor were the plaintiffs warned against installing the siding where glass would reflect, alleges the class action lawsuit. Additionally, argue the plaintiffs, it shouldn’t matter that the damage was caused by reflected sunlight – reflected sunlight is a normal condition the siding should be able to handle without deforming.

“CertainTeed Saint-Gobain’s denial that its vinyl siding is defective as a result of melting or distortion from sunlight reflecting off windows or other building materials fails the essential purpose of the warranty, i.e., that the siding is free from defects under normal exposure condition,” alleges the CertainTeed class action.

The plaintiffs seek to represent a nationwide Class of people who own homes or other structures with CertainTeed vinyl siding, along with subclasses of several states.

The lawsuit seeks damages along with an injunction stopping CertainTeed from falsely marketing the vinyl siding as durable in all weather.

The plaintiffs are represented by Donald W. Boyajian and James R. Peluso of Dreyer Boyajian LLP.

The CertainTeed Vinyl Siding Class Action Lawsuit is Chizniak, et al. v. CertainTeed Corporation, et al., Case No. 1:17-CV-1075, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.

  1. Sonja B. Carroll, MD says:

They were installing my siding (an ugly dark green since they could not get the color I wanted) and I used bug spray on a “stink bug” that is now plaguing KY and it removed the color, then the contractor sprayed the siding to see if the color really did “erase” from bug spray and it did. So yes, that really looks cute….NOT.

  2. Roseann Volpi says:

I have the same problems and CertainTeed won’t help. I even replaced my sunlight that they said was causing the issue with non reflective glass and replaced the sidi ng. Within a few weeks it was all melted again. I’ve replaced this 3 times already, the color is so faded and I’ve tried cleaning it, no help. I would love to join the class action if I can. Can someone contact me.

I just has siding put on in Sept 2022 and it is already melted on 1 side of my house and nobody will own up to it. They blame my neighbors window when it never happened to previous siding that was on my house. Wondering what I can do to fight this.

  3. Danielle Bruno says:

My siding was put up 2 years ago. Within a few months it’s bubbled, warping and faded. Siding is autumn red…it looks pink! The contractor that put it up will not respond.

  4. Paul Lesperance says:

I also had a section deform. It was replaced by the siding contractor as a good will gesture. Now, 8 years later, my siding is fading badly. Certain Teed refuses to address it, claiming I need to scrub the siding to clean it. The warranty states it is covered for any fading beyond normal weathering. When they came out to inspect the siding they washed it with a brush and water and then took color readings. That doesn’t seem like normal weathering to me. I have a large two story home and I do not feel it is reasonable to expect me to scrub my siding on a regular basis. This is not the “LOW Maintenance” they promised me. I have gotten nothing but rejections and run arounds in my subsequent appeals. Is it too late to join this lawsuit? I was contemplating legal action anyway.
Bottom Line: Stay away from Certain Teed products. They do not honor their warranty.

  5. POLLY GILLIS says:

I bought a new construction home from Gemcraft Builders in 2007 that had Certain Teed Vinyl siding. I have has had minoe warping, but this year the siding on the lower half of 1 side of my house has major warping & buckling.

  6. Terri Travis says:

We are having the same issue with our siding and Certainteed denies any responsibility for it. Our house is only 2 1/2 years old. Looking for help in resolving this issue.

  7. Ron DeGraef says:

Harborridge plus D4 I put on neighbors house. Warping and dumpling. But worst of all, fading from a charcoal grey, to a deep purple.

  8. Ming Sun says:

This is happening to my house too. The siding was installed last September and I noticed two weeks ago, the siding on the east side was waved and lumpy. We had the contractor replaced Friday yesterday,it easy perfect but the same problem returned today.
    What should we do?

  9. St Jean says:

Brand new home in 2016. Certainteed siding products all over home continue to ripple and warp. We would love to have some help with this issue. Unsure where to turn.

  10. James Perry says:

Installation last year end of summer. Continue to see sink mark distortion in the vertical siding all around the home. The sinks are close to tje size of a frisbee. Looks like home is all dented up.
