A worker installs panels beige siding on the facade of the houseCertainTeed Corp. and its parent company, Saint-Gobain Corp., were hit with a class action lawsuit alleging the vinyl siding produced by the companies is defective.

Lead plaintiffs allege in their class action lawsuit that vinyl siding sold under the brand name “CertainTeed” blisters and degrades under normal use. The class action includes pictures of warped and wavy siding on the plaintiffs’ houses.

The plaintiffs claim the CertainTeed vinyl siding on their homes began to degrade, blister, warp, melt and deform; however, when the plaintiffs contacted the company, they were allegedly told the company would not perform repairs because the damage was caused by “heat distortion” from glass reflection.

“CertainTeed vinyl siding fails to conform to the public’s reasonable expectation of the product’s durability and longevity, and the company’s promise of ‘Quality made certain, satisfaction guaranteed,’” the CertainTeed class action lawsuit states.

The plaintiffs, residents of various states, including New Work, Florida, Minnesota, Main, South Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee, allege that CertainTeed vinyl was marketed to them as able to withstand the extremes of weather and atmosphere. They also note that the siding comes with a lifetime warranty that is transferable to other owners.

“Defendants’ vinyl siding warranty provides that if CertainTeed determines, in its sole discretion, that its siding products have a manufacturing defect under the terms of the warranty, defendants will either (1) pay to repair, replace, refinish, or coat any siding product it determines has a manufacturing defect, or (2) refund the amount paid by the original property owner for the siding products plus the cost of the labor of the original installation,” states the lawsuit.

According to the CertainTeed class action, the manufacturer is responsible for the damage caused to their siding under the terms of their warranty.

“The CertainTeed Limited Lifetime Warranty provides warranty coverage against manufacturing defects, including but not limited to ‘blistering,” allege the plaintiffs. “The Warranty also covers damage caused to the vinyl siding by ‘normal exposure conditions,’ and in its Limitations section, makes no mention of any warranty exclusion relating to non-flame heat from any source. The Warranty specifically contemplates that the vinyl siding will be subject to ‘exposure to sunlight and extremes of weather and atmosphere.’”

Further, say the plaintiffs, the makers of CertainTeed vinyl siding never verified that the damage was caused by any additional source of heat or reflections off glass. Nor were the plaintiffs warned against installing the siding where glass would reflect, alleges the class action lawsuit. Additionally, argue the plaintiffs, it shouldn’t matter that the damage was caused by reflected sunlight – reflected sunlight is a normal condition the siding should be able to handle without deforming.

“CertainTeed Saint-Gobain’s denial that its vinyl siding is defective as a result of melting or distortion from sunlight reflecting off windows or other building materials fails the essential purpose of the warranty, i.e., that the siding is free from defects under normal exposure condition,” alleges the CertainTeed class action.

The plaintiffs seek to represent a nationwide Class of people who own homes or other structures with CertainTeed vinyl siding, along with subclasses of several states.

The lawsuit seeks damages along with an injunction stopping CertainTeed from falsely marketing the vinyl siding as durable in all weather.

The plaintiffs are represented by Donald W. Boyajian and James R. Peluso of Dreyer Boyajian LLP.

The CertainTeed Vinyl Siding Class Action Lawsuit is Chizniak, et al. v. CertainTeed Corporation, et al., Case No. 1:17-CV-1075, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.

I also put on this siding on my entire home approx 8 to 10 yrs ago. I still have my receipts.

  2. Bridget Walters says:

My siding and roof are Certainteed.

  3. natalie blair says:

My whole house is certainteed and they never followed thru on their warranties

  4. Jeff Martin says:

The BLISTERING is caused by the Nail Hem not being Ridgid enough. Compare CT monogram to any of their products and other products on the market. The Monogram Nail Hem folds with ease. The junk panels sold at home Depot will brake your nails trying to fold it

  5. B. Alexander says:

Is it too late to join this lawsuit? or Do I have to bring my own suit?

  6. Daniel connard says:

My siding is 14 years old. I was going to have a contractor put some siding on where a new vent would go. He said it was so badly faded that it would match. I was going to have vinyl shaken on front of the house but am faced with the same fading problem.

  7. Chris says:

My siding is doing the same after approx 1 year. They came and shortened some panels but it then happened to the shortened panels as well. Bubbling, melting is all over my house. Now contractor and Material handling company say its all on certainteed. They offered approx $10k to replace but it cost me over $30k to have all done to the house. After googling the problem I see this has been a problem for certainties for several years but no one mentions that when selling this product to you.

  8. Lanna says:

My vinyl siding is bubbling and has cracked in winter. Home Depot came out the first year when I reported it and agreed it was defective and thusly replace those pieces. Four years later it is bubbling again. They will not return my calls although they admit it is a material defect. They claim the product is CertainTeed but rebranded by Homedepot? I am retired and built onto a small cabin for my retirement home that I thought would last. I picked the wrong company as they have no integrity. I’ve been begging them for, over a year to,honor their warranty with me.

  9. Eric Morrison says:

Vinyl siding is warping on my house and yet I’m not blaming the siding. Why isn’t anyone going after the window company to maybe put a film on the outside to prevent the 200+ degree reflection. There are cases where the reflection has started lawns on fire and damaged vehicle paint. When is it going to be a house burned down?

  10. Eric Martindale says:

Product: Certainteed Board & Batten siding. This is a vertical siding panel. I am a contractor. i installed this for two customers, and it failed both times with warping and “oil canning”. As soon as the temperature hits 95 degrees, it failed. That was the same day on the first customer, and a month later on the second customer. The impact upon my business has been devastating. Let’s get this class action lawsuit going !!! Others with this problem, PLEASE enter your information. I believe it’s failing all the time.

    1. A. Magnani says:

The siding on my townhouse has melted and warped and certain teed has claimed no responsibility citing the windows. Siding should be able to withstand extreme temperatures. Where are you with the class action?

    2. Brad Stotts says:

The same thing has happened to me I am a contractor installed the siding and on the east side of the house siding oil canned and blistered. When cutting the material the ends were not square in the siding dimpled when I was laying on my cutting table. Company claims it was installed improperly I Have a small claims against me for installing wrong.Siding was installed fall of 2017. If anyone can help me please notify me thank you
