Phenytoin toxicity is a prominent concern for the medical community and patient population, as phenytoin is one of the most popular antiepileptic medications in the United States.
One of the long term side effects associated with phenytoin toxicity is cerebellar atrophy, which can result in chronic impairment of movement and speech. The FDA has approved updating the labels for Dilantin and other phenytoin based medications to mention that cases of cerebellar atrophy have been reported in conjunction with phenytoin toxicity.
Cerebellar atrophy is often associated with phenytoin toxicity or long term phenytoin use, with the FDA warning that cases of cerebellar atrophy occurred in patients who were on long term phenytoin prescriptions.
In one of the most recent studies suggesting a link between cerebellar atrophy and long term phenytoin use, researchers found that found a link between long term phenytoin use and persistent cerebellar dysfunction.
The case study surrounded a patient on long term Dilantin use who reportedly developed cerebellar atrophy and cognitive side effects. In another recent study, researchers highlighted the risks of long term phenytoin toxicity.
Researchers analyzed several cases that were initially misdiagnosed. Researchers stated it was important for physicians to be aware of potential side effects with phenytoin toxicity, including cerebellar atrophy.
Researchers further stated phenytoin based medications should not be used as a first line treatment option for epilepsy.
Overview of Phenytoin Toxcitiy and Cerebellar Atrophy Correlation
Phenytoin (brand name Dilantin) is one of the oldest and most reliable antiepileptic medications in the United States. It is prescribed to treat patients with a variety of epileptic conditions, and works by controlling the electrical signals in the brain.
While phenytoin has helped millions of patients, there have been studies since the early 1990s and before indicating a link to cerebellar atrophy. Cerebellar atrophy, or cerebellar ataxia, is the degeneration of the cerebellum of the brain. This condition can either be focal or generalized, in which different parts of the brain shrinks and loses neurological connections with the rest of the body.
With the cerebellum primly responsible for movement and speech, patients who develop cerebellar atrophy often experience difficulties with talking and basic movements. While there are a number of causes for cerebellar atrophy, like degenerative disease or traumatic injury, phenytoin toxicity has long since been a concern for the medical community.
In a 1994 study, researchers noticed phenytoin patients had significantly smaller cerebelli. This study was conducted to see how phenytoin effects the brain when preventing seizures, and noticed the troubling characteristic in diagnostic imaging. Researchers stated that long term phenytoin toxicity could significantly increase the risk of cerebellar atrophy.
In general, phenytoin lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
