Blue Buffalo pet foodOn Thursday, Blue Buffalo announced that it had agreed to a $32 million class action settlement over allegations the pet food manufacturer deceived consumers about the contents of its pet food products.

Blue Buffalo, a leading natural pet food company, claimed that its pet food products were free of poultry byproducts. However, this claim was challenged by rival pet food maker Nestle Purina PetCare Co., and by plaintiffs in 13 separate class action lawsuits. The consumers’ Blue Buffalo class action lawsuits were consolidated in Missouri federal court in October 2014.

The false advertising class action lawsuits took issue with Blue Buffalo’s “True Blue Promise” label, which indicates the product contains no poultry byproduct meals; no corn, wheat or soy; and no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. According to the plaintiffs, several investigations have indicated that those ingredients are present in products with the “True Blue Promise” label.

According to the Blue Buffalo class action lawsuits, consumers paid a premium for the Blue Buffalo products with the “True Blue Promise” label because they were falsely advertised as having better quality ingredients than many other pet foods on the market.

Blue Buffalo denies any wrongdoing and insists the issue was related to the misconduct of a former ingredient supplier. However, Blue Buffalo has agreed to settle the false advertising class action lawsuit to avoid the uncertainty, burden and expense associated with further litigation.

Although Blue Buffalo says it is still pursuing claims against the ingredient supplier, the company notes that it was in the best interest of its customers to resolve the class action lawsuits.

If the proposed Blue Buffalo settlement is approved, consumers who bought the allegedly mislabeled products will be eligible for compensation that is proportional to the amount they spent on the pet food.

In a statement posted Thursday on the Purina website, Purina calls the proposed Blue Buffalo class action settlement “the largest pet food class action settlement ever.” Purina’s separate class action lawsuit against Blue Buffalo is still ongoing.

I’m affraid I may have missed the deadline. This is all my dog has ate the past year. This last bag hes been refusing to eat. I wondered if something was wrong with it so came here and just found this. Is it too late now? I’m going to return this full bag to the store. He’s been sick off and on but vet didn’t know why. I owe a thousand in my care credit for vet bill. This is disturbing :( I’m disabled and he is my best friend.

I did the same for years I fed Ol Roy then after the scariest recall ever, I started making my own food for our dogs. I enjoyed it but, because of travel and other issues I had to find ways to feed our dogs on the go. I started looking hard at ingredients. Blue Buffalo Adult Brown Rice and Chicken had nearly ALL the same ingredients I had been putting in my homemade brand. I started buying 3 – 33lbs bags every week. I think they may have only been 30 lbs at one point. This was very expensive but, I had faith in Blue Buffalo after speaking to the person I was led to believe founded the company and hearing his story. After feeding my dogs Blue Buffalo for some time I noticed that the number of Life Bits had decreased and that the texture of several bags of the food seemed to be different. I called Blue Buffalo, they naturally said there is no change in the formula and that their food is premium quality. I kept feeding Blue, soon a couple of my dogs became seriously ill, stomach and intestinal issues. I took them off the Blue for a more bland homemade diet. the improved. I put them back on Blue and you guessed it, they became sick again, soon after other dogs became sick. I immediately stopped Blue Buffalo and had to go back to homemade as I transitioned my dogs onto another Premium brand of dog food. This seems to be an ongoing issue of PROFIT Before Pets. I hope not ALL pet food manufacturers look at it that way but, I learned the hard way that Blue Buffalo seems to

  3. DONT B IGNORANT MURICA says:

Dont be ignorant of this !!! (Pet food COMPETITOR Nestle Purina PetCare Co.) We started our dogs on Blue Buffalo years back after having one die & others being poisoned by Walmarts Ol Roy ( RAT POISON) dinner rounds. We looked at dog food ingredients & tried them on several. Best formulated brands by Science Diet, Purina, Eukanuba & Iams all gave stomach issues & soft stools. Blue Buffalo has changed our dogs health for the better, inside & out. Im sure the others out there are not much better than Ol Roy. I had a friend that swore by Eukanuba, but that was years back. Possibly they turned to the dark side also ? If you eat corn hard shell tacos from Taco Bell for a week, Then eat chicken strips from Chik Fil A for a week. Let me know how those weeks went. We are lied to everyday by government, businesses & lawyers. You just have to pick the best one after trying them all out. The only way to keep them honest. If you fall for the media crap, you failed ! Election is coming up, think about it before you vote. What have these candidates done for their state ? Good or Bad ?

What ticks me off, our Dog has Addison’s, we purchased this product because he required a special diet, the “ingrediants” provided false information by omitting to ingrediants . Our poor guy started gaining weight and having issues, what we were trying to avoid, was right in the food we fed him. Hope they’re happy.

Proof of purchase is NOTHING compared to the vet bills I have faced since December 2015! I have proof that my dog was poisoned by this dog food, have the cans of food, the vet bills, the pictures and everything to prove it. I almost lost her! She started with peeing blood (saw the vet then), then it turned to not eating (saw the vet again), then vomiting blood (saw vet again) and then not eating and pooping blood (saw vet again)…. during this time, she was being treated as a poison victim, and the therapeutic meds where all we could do to get it out of her system and stabilized. We know it was Blue Buffalo because she is ALWAYS fed Wellness brand dog food, which get delivered to my house, and the delivery was late so I was forced to go to PetSmart to buy it, but they were out… so I was forced to buy another brand, so I chose Blue, which I thought was good. Within 5 days, the problems started. I only bought 3 cans, she eats a half a can a night, so I still had half left of the 3rd can. Nothing else had changed in her diet… her urine showed no signs of infection.

What a bunch of double talking lies. I file my claim today and will never buy their products again. I feel very betrayed that they continue to spread lies that they have sued others instead of admitting they were found guilty in a court.

  7. L says:

I did file a claim. Luckily, I bought the dog food online and was able to prove I spent about $1542 over 2.5 years and attach to the claim. According to the settlement, I can be due to receive about $150. I feed my dogs Nutro now. Cheaper, and they like it and vets say they are perfectly healthy.

…and money will make us all feel better about the situation. Why, I wouldn’t be surprised if the dogs who ate chicken meal contracted bird flu and we didn’t even know it. Murderers…

  10. Heather says:

I have been feeding this to my dogs for years. One of my dogs about a year ago began to have dementia like symptoms… I took him to the vet, and she said he could just be getting old but try switching dog food. I thought it was so strange, but I listened. My dog no longer hides in corners, is no longer scared of the phone ring, anything he suddenly began doing that was so out of his character.. He is himself again since weening him off of blue buffalo and onto another food. I am so upset with blue buffalo because there must be something chemically wrong with the product.
