baby-powder-cancer-trialThe baby powder cancer trial for a woman who is dying of cancer has been set for July in California.

Plaintiff Eva E. claims she has less than six months left to live because she has ovarian cancer. She alleges that she developed ovarian cancer because of her use of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder.

Because of an urgent timeline based on Eva’s possible time left to live, her attorneys urged the judge to set the baby powder cancer trialdate for June. The date that was chosen for this baby powder cancer trial is July 3rd.

She and six other women filed this suit in the Superior Court of Los Angeles last July claiming that for many years they used baby powder believing it was safe to use. The defendants knew or should have known, according to the lawsuit, that they were selling a cancer-causing product.

Both sides still must exchange medical records, designate expert witnesses, as well as hold a hearing on causation and scientific findings.

The plaintiff’s side believes this is not soon enough. Her attorney told Law360, “If [Eva] dies in the next four months or five months, then we’re wasting our time here in some ways, because the whole point is to get her a trial while she’s alive, and I think we can do it.”

However, the defendant’s attorneys believe that the baby powder cancer trial date is too soon. They claim that there is too much to do for the baby powder cancer trial and that it cannot be done before July. They claim that the hearing regarding scientific evidence alone will take a week.

The defendant’s attorneys are asking for the baby powder cancer trial date to be set for August.

Does Baby Powder Cause Cancer?

Critics claim that talc-based powder can cause cancers such as ovarian cancer. Critics also claim that Johnson & Johnson has known of the dangers of talc for many years but have neglected to inform the public and have continued to aggressively market baby powder for safe use.

Beginning in the 1960s, research regarding talc-based powder has shown a significant connection between ovarian cancer and the use of baby powder in the female genital area.

It is thought the talc particles travel to and embed themselves into the ovaries. This eventually can lead to ovarian cancer.

Baby powder has been marketed as a way to keep a woman’s genital area fresh and clean. However, studies have shown that women who consistently used talc-based powder have a 33 percent increased risk of ovarian cancer compared to those who have not used baby powder.
