U.S. military members who have been seriously injured by an IED and EFP when they were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan may be eligible to file IED lawsuits.
According to reports, several of the IEDs and EFPs that were used in Afghanistan and Iraq were supplied by Iran. Moreover, under federal law, Americans who have served in the military and have been injured in such attacks may be eligible to seek compensation under the U.S. Anti-Terrorism Act.
An Anti-Terrorism Act lawsuit can be filed against Iran and the banks accused of supporting Iran as a “state sponsor of terrorism.”
Anti-Terrorism Act Lawsuit and Iran’s Role in Terrorist Attacks
Reports maintain that RAMS, IEDs, and EFPs used to attack U.S. servicemembers in Iraq were purportedly supplied by Iran. Several other different kinds of ammunition were also supplied by Iran.
An IED is an Improvised Explosive Device. This device is often used as a roadside bomb, and they were extensively used in both Iraq and Afghanistan. There are responsible for a large number of injuries and deaths of U.S. military personnel.
Through the Iraq’s War launch and through 2007, IEDs were used in approximately 63% of coalition deaths. In Afghanistan, moreover, reports indicate that between 2001 and to the present, approximately 66% of deaths were because of IEDs.
EFPs are Explosively Formed Penetrators. They were described as “The Most Lethal Weapon Americans Faced in Iraq,” according to a report in The New York Times. This weapons are so deadly because they can allegedly pierce armor and can also be hidden by insurgent forces from afar.
These devices can also travel 100 yards or more and still maintain their shape. Additionally, they can be concealed and obscured as trash or rocks and are easy to hide.
RAMs or IRAMS are Improvised Rocket Assisted Munitions. They are also called rocket-propelled bombs. These IRAMs are propane tanks that become filled with explosives. They are then launched using 107mm rockets.
In Iraq, these weapons were often concealed in the back of a truck and were later deployed by a remote control.
Iran had purportedly made the IEDs and EFPs in large quantities in factories.
Adm. Mike Mullen, the then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed in 2011 that these weapons were being manufactured and sent to support Shi’ite extremists. He had also confirmed that these actions were known by top Iranian government officials.
“Iran is very directly supporting extremist Shia groups, which are killing our troops,” he said. Mullen continued to iterate, “They are shipping high-tech weapons in there – RAMS, EFPs – which are killing our people and the forensics prove that.”
Through an Anti-Terrorism Act Lawsuit, the U.S. allows for victims who have suffered from terrorist attached to get compensation for these attacks. It allows them to sue conspirators responsible for such actions.
