A Lord & Taylor data breach from a cyber attack back in May 2017 may have affected 5 million customers and their sensitive information, including credit and debit card numbers.
If you were affected by the Lord & Taylor data breach, you may be eligible to join a data breach class action lawsuit investigation, which may lead to compensation.
Lord & Taylor Data Breach: The Basics
The cyber attack that led to the Lord & Taylor data breach also affected Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks OFF 5th stores. A well-known hacking syndicate known as JokerStash targeted the retail chains, both owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company, in May 2017. On March 28, 2018, JokerStash announced that it had successfully hacked the information of millions of Lord & Taylor and Saks customers.
Of significant concern is the fact that information like customers’ credit and debit card information can be sold for profit to parties interested in obtaining consumer information, who could use it to make fraudulent purchases or commit identity theft. Although these problems can be fixed, it is generally a huge hassle. According to a study conducted by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, “among victims who had personal information used for fraudulent purposes, 29% spent a month or more resolving problems.”
Some have claimed that the Lord & Taylor data breach is a result of insufficient security practices, which allowed the hacking to occur in the first place.
Lord & Taylor Data Breach Class Action Lawsuit
A class action lawsuit has been filed over the Lord & Taylor data breach. According to the lawsuit, the Hudson’s Bay Company retail chains affected by the breach (Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Saks OFF 5th) failed to adequately protect the sensitive data of their consumers.
According to the lawsuit, the Lord & Taylor data breach was a direct result of these companies’ “failure to establish and implement appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to ensure the security and confidentiality of [consumers’ information] to protect against reasonably foreseeable threats to the security or the integrity of such information.”
Even after the company learned of the Lord & Taylor data breach, the class action lawsuit claims, it failed to notify customers that their sensitive data may have been compromised for nearly a year after the breach itself took place.
“Once we have more clarity around the facts, we will notify our customers quickly and will offer those impacted free identity protection services, including credit and web monitoring,” Hudson’s Bay Co. claimed in a press release.
