Nassar Accused of Further Criminal Sexual Assault at Olympic Training CenterFormer USA Gymnastics physician Larry Nassar faces another sexual assault case in Texas, where he has been charged with six counts of criminal sexual assault against a child.

A grand jury recently charged Larry Nassar, former USA Gymnastics physicians, with six counts of criminal sexual assault against a child. The criminal sexual assault reportedly happened at Karolyi Ranch in the Sam Huston National Forest.

Karolyi Ranch, which lies 50 miles north of Houston, has previously served as a training center for the women’s national gymnastics team. The team has since ceased their association with the training center.

Trainer Debra Van Horn, who worked at Karolyi Ranch, has also been indicted on one charge of criminal sexual assault against a child for her role in Nassar’s systematic abuse, according to Refinery29. Bela and Martha Karolyi, the owners of Karolyi Ranch, have not been charged, allegedly due to a lack of evidence.

Nassar’s most recent indictment is punishable with up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. It is currently unclear if the charges will go to trial, but the punishment has the potential to be added to his already lengthy prison sentence.

Earlier this year, Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison after pleading guilty to criminal sexual assault against at least 140 young women. The lawsuit was brought forward by members of the USA gymnastics team and accused Nassar of abusing women younger than 18, and some younger than 9. During the trial, numerous victims gave their accounts including Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, and Gabby Douglas.

Nassar was also sentenced to 60 years in prison for possession of child pornography. The sentence, which was handed down shortly before Nassar’s federal sentence, will begin after he has completed his prison time for criminal sexual assault.

Nassar’s criminal sexual assault case is considered one of the largest sexual assault scandals in U.S. sports history. The accusations against him shed a negative light on the sport that allowed Nassar to get away with his crimes for over 20 years.

Aly Raisman, a victim of Nassar’s criminal sexual assault and an outspoken critic of the USA Gymnastics team recently filed a lawsuit against the team and the Olympic committee. Raisman claims that the organization’s policy allowed Nassar to get away with his crimes against her and other athletes.

In addition to the huge Olympic scandal, Nassar was also the center of a Michigan State University scandal. 332 survivors of criminal sexual assault came forward to accuse Nassar of abuse during his time as a sports physician for the university. The lawsuit reached a $500 million settlement with the criminal sexual assault victims.

Nassar’s high profile indictment serves as hope for victims of sexual assault around the country. Countless athletes have been sexually abused in an athletic setting by coaching, physicians, and other figures. A criminal sexual assault lawsuit may be able to hold their abusers accountable and draw attention to the faulty systems which allow this behavior to continue.
