Honda owners have filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker alleging that Honda CR-V vehicles are equipped with defective collision avoidance systems.

Lead plaintiffs Kathleen Cadena, Mukeshbai Patel, and Steven Geiger recently filed a class action against American Honda Motor Co. Inc., claiming that the company’s 2017 CR-V vehicles are equipped with a “Honda Sensing” system which makes driving the car more dangerous.

Cadena, Patel, and Geiger say they all experienced the system malfunction in their cars, purchased between June and October 2017. All three plaintiffs allegedly brought their car to a dealer for repairs, but continue to experience the issue.

The Honda Sensing system uses radar technology to detect nearby objects. The sensors alert the driver of imminent collisions or if the car is drifting out of its lane. The system can also be used in conjunction with cruise control to maintain a set distance from other vehicles. Honda Sensing comes standard with the EX, EX-L, and Touring CR-V models.

The Honda CR-V class action lawsuit claims that the collision avoidance system intermittently displays false collision warnings and reduces cruise control speed for no reason.

“But it is not only lack of repair that keeps owners of such class vehicles frustrated, but that when Honda Sensing system malfunctions, it does so abruptly, without warning, while the class vehicles are in motion on a public roadway,” the Honda Sensing class action lawsuit states. “The very system that was designed to keep drivers safe is in fact making them less safe by detracting their attention.”

The Honda CR-V crash sensing class action claims that Honda is aware of the software issue but has failed to take action to correct the bugs. The plaintiffs claim that in 2017 Honda allegedly sent a notice to authorized dealers informing them that the system was subject to sporadic false warnings and speed fluctuations in cruise control. The notice instructed dealers to update the system’s software to fix the issue.

“However, as evident from plaintiffs’ experiences and those of other consumers, the software update fails to correct the Honda Sensing defect or Honda’s dealers failed or refused even to perform such corrective action,” the Honda CR-V class action states.

Despite numerous consumer reports and an internal acknowledgement of the defect, Honda allegedly continues to keep silent to the public.

“Honda has never disclosed the Honda Sensing system defect to consumers – through its dealerships or otherwise,” the Honda crash sensing class action lawsuit claims. “It has not even stopped selling CR-V vehicles with defective Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive system; it continues to sell them – without including any warning – as both new vehicles and used vehicles.”

The plaintiffs seek to represent a Class of owners and lessees of 2017 Honda CR-V models with the Honda Sensing system.

The Honda CR-V class action seeks damages, incidental damages, consequential damages, punitive damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

    I have a 2017 Honda crv and I have the same problem with all the sensors on my dash and already took my car to the dealer and they told me the problem is. The battery and I replaced the battery and I still having the problem with the all the sensors

      I have the same issues on a 2018 Honda CRV. I went ahead & bought a new battery since Honda charges $65 just to run a “Diagnostic” report, but the lights keep going off. Now Honda is telling me I must pay $1,475 plus tax for them to replace the multi purpose camera (Which of course isn’t included under warranty) & if I don’t replace it, then the lights and dinging will continue to go off.
