The Ultimate Fighting Championship will compensate viewers for a technical difficulty that made many fans miss the long-anticipated pay-per-view match between Mayweather and McGregor. The compensations will be made based on how much of the match a fan missed.
Multiple fans filed a class action lawsuit against UFC after a technical difficulty with the streaming service caused millions of fans to miss a match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, called “The Money Fight.”
Fans claim that they had to pay roughly $100 to watch “The Money Fight,” as part of Showtime’s pay-per-view program. However, many fans were unable to watch the fight, despite shelling out money specifically for the event. Allegedly, a technical difficulty caused fans’ connection to the match to be disrupted for various periods of times.
Some fans claim that they missed only a few seconds of the match, others say they missed a few minutes, and others claim that they missed more than five minutes of the match due to the technical difficulties. Fans were outraged because they claim that the bulk of the technical difficulties occurred during Mayweather’s dramatic “knockout” win in the 10th round of the match, causing many fans to miss this critical and exciting moment.
Allegedly, fans complained about the technical difficulty over social media as soon as the problems began. Showtime and UFC supposedly downplayed the severity of the technical difficulties, though they did offer to compensate affected viewers.
UFC President Dana White allegedly claimed that the Mayweather-McGregor match, with its 6.7 million purchases of the match, was the most lucrative pay-per-view event in history. Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza fired back by saying that the event broke no records. Now, the companies face backlash and displeasure from the millions of affected consumers.
Courts granted preliminary approval of a settlement between fans, Showtime, and UFC, which will compensate viewers based on how much of the match they missed due to technical difficulties. The following compensations will be paid to viewers:
- Viewers who missed more than five minutes of the match will receive a full, $99.99 refund of their PPV purchase
- Viewers who missed less than five minutes of the match will receive a $50 refund
- Viewers who missed only preliminary bouts of the match will receive a $25 refund
- Viewers who bought food or drinks for viewers who had streaming interrupted will receive a $5 refund or three months of complimentary UFC Fight Pass access
To help “The Money Fight” viewers access their compensation, Showtime and UFC have also agreed to set up a toll-free phone line and a website to manage compensation claims. The two companies will also pay all fees associated with notifying viewers of their rights to file claims.
