Pressure cooker stainless steel French-made for cooking food in steamA lawsuit has been filed against the makers of the Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker by a woman who was injured by a pressure cooker explosion while using the product.

Plaintiff couple Elaine B. and Gary B. claim that Elaine was severely injured as a result of an explosion of their Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker that was purchased from the Home Shopping Network.

In 2011, Elaine and Gary were given an Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker purchased from the Home Shopping Network as a gift. However, in February 2015, Elaine was using her Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker in her kitchen and it suddenly exploded.

This lawsuit alleges that “a defect in the design and/or manufacture caused the subject product to malfunction, and violently and forcefully propel the lid of the pressure cooker upwards toward the ceiling, causing the scalding hot contents to burn [the plaintiff’s] arms, chest, breasts, hand, neck and torso, and other injuries necessitating hospital treatment and surgery.”

She claims that because of the explosion of her Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker, she “was caused to sustain severe and permanent injuries, including first, second and third degree burns, permanent scars and skin damage.” Additionally, Elaine experienced illness and the inability to walk.

She alleges that she remains in this state and has spent large amounts of money for medical aid including the cost of surgery. It is possible that her condition is permanent and that she “has suffered grievous physical and mental pain and anguish; and will continue to suffer pain for a considerable period of time to come.”

Elaine believes that she will be unable to attend to her regular duties or live life normally because of the explosion of the Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker.

How does an Elite Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker Work?

Pressure cookers work by keeping steam trapped inside a sealed chamber. This built up pressure reduces cooking times of meals significantly and can be seen as a time saver for busy families.

As the pressure rises inside the pressure cooker, so does the temperature. Many see these appliances, including the Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker, as dangerous additions to unsuspecting customers’ kitchens.

In fact, inside a pressure cooker, the pressure can rise to 15 pounds per square inch and the internal temperature can rise to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. If a pressure cooker explodes or suffers a malfunction, this hot liquid can burn anyone in the vicinity like it did to Elaine.

Sometimes, faulty valves or safe lock lids are to blame. Special release valves allow some pressure to release before a user opens the device. Also, pressure cookers are fitted with lids that lock so the contents do not explode. But at times, these components do not work as planned.

When this occurs with an Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker, a user may be able to file a Elite Maxi-Matic pressure cooker lawsuit like Elaine and her husband did.

This Elite Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker Lawsuit is Case No. 7:17-cv-04856 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
