Propecia sexual side effectsA 30-year-old male model from Amsterdam took Propecia, a popular hair loss drug, for six years in order to salvage his career.

Model Giorgos Tsetis, whose career has taken him to London and Paris with designers such as Armani and Versace, was afraid that his receding hairline in his early twenties would cost him his successful career.

Tsetis began taking Propecia when clumps of his hair began falling out at the age of 21. Tsetis had done his research beforehand, and knew that one of the serious potential side effects of taking Propecia is sexual dysfunction.

Though Tsetis knew the potential consequences for his sex life, “there isn’t even a handful of models whose hair is receding, so to have a full set of hair is a prerequisite,” in his line of work, he said.

At one point, he said, a makeup artist had to fill in his forehead to conceal his receding hairline at a shoot, and that was the breaking point for him. After that, he immediately began researching hair loss products, and came across Propecia.

Propecia is a hair loss drug commonly used to treat male pattern baldness, as well as other scalp conditions. Propecia works to “block the action of a chemical in the body which affects hair loss in men.”

Tsetis says that Propecia lowered his sex drive to such an extent that his girlfriend almost broke up with him. Though he had voluntarily taken the drug to save his modeling career, he was still negatively affected by these Propecia side effects. “My confidence as a man went down the drain,” he said. “Not being able to perform takes a toll on you.”

Tsetis stopped using Propecia in 2012, growing tired of constant erectile dysfunction and trying to keep his relationship together. About the same time, Tsetis met Roland Peralta, creator of hair-loss products in the shampoo industry.

Now, Peralta is Tsetis’ business partner. Together, the two have created Nutrafol, a vitamin supplement containing all natural ingredients that is supposed to naturally promote hair growth. The product claims to rebalance damaging hormones in the body, which in turn allows the body to grow hair follicles.

Male pattern baldness is extremely common, and according to Peralta, many men think they can’t do anything about it. Tsetis and Peralta created the product to respond to men in Tsetis’ position. “It’s common in men’s modeling and a very big concern,” he said. Tsetis wants to help others in male modeling without making the kind of sacrifices he did early on in his modeling career.

At least one person, however, is not convinced by Nutrafol’s claims. Jo Travers from The London Nutritionist says she can’t find any “good quality, peer reviewed research studies backing up their claims.” According to Travers, there isn’t even a list of ingredients contained in Nutrafol on their website.

Hundreds of Propecia lawsuits have been filed for failure to adequately warn of serious side effects, including sexual dysfunction. If you or someone you know has taken Propecia or a similar drug to combat hair loss, and have experienced sexual dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction or low libido as a result, you may be able to file a lawsuit.
