Pradaxa side effects studyA widower and daughter are seeking justice for their deceased loved one who died after using Pradaxa, which allegedly caused a deadly bleeding incident.

Mississippi plaintiffs Keely C. and Brian C., allege in their Pradaxa lawsuit that the new-generation anticoagulant had caused internal bleeding injuries to occur in their mother and wife, respectively.

The father-daughter duo is suing Boehringer Ingelheim in a joint effort, after Margaret C. had suffered severe internal bleeding events that eventually led to her death.

Margaret had been prescribed Pradaxa to prevent a stroke, along with treating her atrial fibrillation. She had been recommended Pradaxa over Warfarin, due to its efficient treatment method and single-dose prescription.

In contrast to the traditional American anticoagulant, Pradaxa does not require patients to see their physicians regularly for dose adjustments.

Pradaxa had been released to the market in 2010, and was the first anticoagulant to be released to the market since Warfarin. The drug almost immediately overtook Warfarin in popularity, as patients were excited for the prospect of having a more convenient medication.

According to the Pradaxa lawsuit, Margaret closely followed prescription instructions while taking the drug, along with following the advice of her physician. Unfortunately, this diligence did not protect her from the devastating design defects that Pradaxa, and other new-generation anticoagulants have been repeatedly criticized for.

Like many patients before her, Margaret soon experienced internal bleeding complications now commonly associated with Pradaxa. She was rushed to the hospital on Jan. 24, 2014 and died a day later.

Overview of Pradaxa Bleeding Allegations

Keely and Brian have filed the Pradaxa lawsuit on Margaret’s behalf, claiming that Boehinger Ingelheim had sold her an unreasonably dangerous product and had failed to fully disclose the risks of their drug.

Upon filing this Pradaxa lawsuit, the plaintiffs have learned that Pradaxa and other new-generation anticoagulants lack a vital safety feature of Warfarin, which is an approved stopping agent.

Currently, there is no reversal agent on the market for potential Pradaxa bleeding injuries, as well as for the other new-generation anticoagulants. Warfarin users are able to use vitamin K in the case of internal bleeding.

Despite the severity of this risk, Boehringer Ingelheim allegedly chose not to disclose the information to the public, to protect the drug’s profit margins.

The plaintiffs stated that there were no warnings or indications on Pradaxa’s warning label, with the defendant failing to provide no relevant studies. The plaintiffs’ lawyers stated that the Boehringer Ingelheim had the civil responsibility of waring Margaret and other Pradaxa patients of all possible complications associated with their drugs, because the public relied on the accuracy of the given information.

Keely and Brian insist that their loved one never would have used Pradaxa, if she had known the risks attached to the medication. Medical experts state that if Pradaxa and other new-generation anticoagulants had the same safety regulations as Warfarin, then many internal bleeding injuries could have been avoided.

For being allegedly responsible for manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing a dangerous drug, Keely and Brian are suing Boehringer Ingelheim. The charges include: negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

This Pradaxa Lawsuit is Keely C. & Brian C. v. Boehringer Ingelheim, Case No.1:15-cv-00259-LG-RHW, in the U.S. District Court of Southern Mississippi, Southern Division.

In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
