A popular popcorn brand sold in several U.S. states issued a recall of its kettle corn over concerns the bags may contain undeclared milk ingredients.

American Pop Corn Company issued the voluntary recall Wednesday for its JOLLY TIME Healthy Pop Kettle Corn 100’s, stating “people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product contained inside the recalled bags.”

According to the company, the microwavable popcorn bags were sold in at least 16 U.S. states including at retailers and warehouses in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Jolly Time said it did not distribute the products to any other locations.

The recall was issued after the company was notified by a customer that “certain cartons of Healthy Pop Kettle Corn 100’s (4 count) were inadvertently filled with another flavor of popcorn, potentially exposing consumers to undeclared allergen: milk.”

The recalled items can be identified by packing that will display a universal product code (barcode number) of 2819000141, a “best by” date of Jan. 25, 2022, along with a production code showing “1025” and “3&4” with a timestamp in between.

Though no allergic reactions hae so far been reported in connection with the recalled products, customers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk are being urged to avoid consuming the product “and discard it immediately,” according to the recall from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

No other JOLLY TIME popcorn products from the company have been recalled at this time, the company said.

Milk allergy symptoms can differ from person to person and may occur a few minutes to a few hours after someone with an allergy drinks milk or eats milk products, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction can include:

·        Hives

·        Wheezing

·        Itching or tingling feeling around the lips or mouth

·        Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat

·        Coughing or shortness of breath

·        Vomiting

Symptoms that may take more time to develop may be:

·        Loose stools or diarrhea, which may contain blood

·        Abdominal cramps

·        Runny nose

·        Watery eyes

·        Colic, in babies

A milk allergy can also cause anaphylaxis, which is a “life-threatening reaction that narrows the airways and can block breathing,” Mayo Clinic reports.

According to the health system, milk is the third most common food to cause anaphylaxis, behind peanuts and tree nuts.

Anaphylaxis symptoms will likely start soon after consumption. These symptoms can include:

·        Constriction of airways, including a swollen throat that makes it difficult to breathe

·        Facial flushing

·        Itching

·        Shock, with a marked drop in blood pressure
