Nature Way Almond Butter recalled due to "undeclared peanuts" and allergy concerns, according to FDA

Natural Way has recalled jars of its almond butter sold nationwide over concerns they contain “undeclared peanuts.”

The recall, announced by the US Food and Drug Administration on Friday, involves 16-ounce jars of the Arkansas-based company’s original almond butter.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product contained inside the recalled jars,” the FDA stated in its alert.

The FDA notes that no illnesses have so far been reported in connection with the undeclared nuts, but the recall was issued after a customer reported a jar of peanut butter had been mislabeled as almond butter.

The affected jars were distributed across the US in retail stores and via mail orders, according to the recall. Natural Way products are sold in more than 350 locations across the U.S., including major retailers like Whole Foods, Walmart, Safeway, Amazon, and more, the company states on its website.

Peanut allergies are the most common causes of severe allergy attacks, and the most common form of food anaphylaxis, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Signs of an allergic reaction can include:

  • Skin reactions, such as hives, redness, or swelling
  • Itching or tingling in or around the mouth and throat
  • Digestive problems, such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or vomiting
  • Tightening or swelling of the throat
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Runny nose
  • Constriction of airways
  • A severe drop in blood pressure (shock)
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness

Natural Way, which launched in 2017, is known for its two main products: peanut butter and almond butter, both of which the company claims “are unlike any on the market.” The two nut butters are made with olive oil instead of palm oil or hydrogenated oils, and come in multiple flavors such as honey, coffee, pumpkin spice, and more, according to the company’s website

The affected almond butter comes in 16-ounce, plastic jars and includes the following:

  • Lot #505721 on the bottom and;
  • Almond butter label with a UPC of 850001775175

Those who may have purchased the almond butter are being told to return the jars to the place where they purchased the product. If the UPC and lot numbers match the recalled item, the customers will be eligible for a full refund.

Anyone with questions can contact the company directly at (479) 595-5660 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST Monday through Friday.
