CytoSport Evolve Protein Shake recall over undeclared soy.

A popular plant-based protein shake is being recalled after its manufacturer discovered it may contain soy protein.

CytoSport, Inc., the manufacturer of Evolve, announced the voluntary recall of specific lots of its Evolve Protein Shakes Saturday. The recall was issued through the U.S. Food and Drug  Administration Monday.

CytoSport is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The recall affects Evolve Double Chocolate Protein Shake in 11 oz – Tetra Pak cartons sold in 4 packs with MFG dates 12/31/2020 and 1/1/2021, and Evolve Vanilla Bean Protein Shake in 11 oz – Tetra Pak cartons sold in 4 packs with MFG dates 12/30/2020 and 1/25/2021.

The shakes were being recalled after a third-party supplier was found to have supplied ingredients cross-contaminated with soy protein. The company said it was recalling the product “to protect public health.”

“Consumers that have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy run the risk of an allergic reaction if they continue to consume the products,” it said.

CytoSport said there had been no reported illnesses to date.

The shakes were distributed nationwide through retailers, online and through the company website. Customers who bought the Evolve Protein Shake were urged to throw them out or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Retailers selling the product were told to immediately remove the affected product from sale and shelves.

“The company is working closely with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has rectified the issue, but in the meantime is taking these actions out of commitment to and concern for consumers,” the recall said.

Meanwhile, CytoSport has settled class action claims in the past. Last year, a $12 million class action settlement was reached resolving a class action lawsuit involving CytoSport, Inc.

The class action alleged the company made false and misleading statements about the protein content of its Ready-To-Drink products and allegedly misleading “Lean” and “L-Glutamine” claims on its Protein Powder products.
