Recall Alert: 100+ Velvet Ice Cream Products Yanked After Listeria Concerns

As the temperatures rise, consumers may want to steer clear of more than 100 Velvet ice cream products named in a recall notice published Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after this discovery of a potential listeria contamination.  

Sherbet and ice cream products are a part of the multi-state recall announced by Velvet Ice Cream. The products were sold in supermarkets, drug stores, and convenience stores after March 24, 2021, in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia.  

Hundreds of products are listed in the FDA recall notice and include pails of ice cream and sherbet, as well as individually wrapped items. The recalled items can be identified by the product code listed on the bottom of the package. In addition, some recalled items were sold under the brand names “Buehler’s,” “North Star,” “Discount Drug Mart,” “Ruggles,” “Super Dip,” and “Whale of a Pail.” 

Consumers are warned not to eat the recalled Velvet Ice Cream products. The recall notice states that routine testing revealed potential listeria contamination.  

Products contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may lead to severe and potentially deadly illnesses in some individuals who consume them, particularly those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and small children or infants.  

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” warns the FDA in its notice.  

Consumers can return recalled Velvet Ice Cream products to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact the company at 800-589-5000 x237 or through their website.  

“We’re conducting this voluntary recall in cooperation with the FDA out of consideration for the wellbeing and safety of our customers and consumers,” said Velvet Ice Cream CEO Luconda Dager in the FDA recall notice. “We continue to be committed to serving consumers with high quality ice cream and sherbet products.”
